How long did you drink protein shakes?
I am 18 months out from RNY and I still drink at least 1 30g protien shake a day and 1 10g scoop of powder from big train. I work out a lot and do at least 10 - 16 mile hikes with steep elevations on the weekends so I need to make sure my protein stays up. I always say that you should follow your doctor/nutrionist on these things. I would think the doctor would say if you can get it through food do that but if you cant make sure you are getting it in somehow. Each surgeon seems to be a little different but I would have him ask his doctor why he feels 6 weeks and address any concerns he has.

All surgeons have different ideas about recommendations for post-op nutrition. If someone can consume 75-80g of protein per day via regular food, power to them. If not, supplementing with a protein shake is simple and doable. I am 8 1/2 years post-op and still drink a shake or two each day to meet my (high) protein goals.

I am almost one-year post-surgery and still drink at least one protein shake per day, usually at breakfast or for my morning snack. This is the only way I can keep my protein levels up. I also have one protein bar (Quest) to add more protein.
I still drink at least one 30g shake a day and sometimes add unflavored protein powder to other foods. I am 4 1/2 months out and there is no way I could get all the protein in without it. My doc doesn't want you drinking 3 shakes a day or anything... but one shake a day is expected at least while you are in weight loss mode.

I'm six years post op and still have one for breakfast most days.
Is your dad getting enough protein without shakes already? How does his doc suggest he get his protein in?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I love my morning shake and I often have one around 3 O'clock also. Keeps me honest! :)
