1st Night With CPAP, Need Tips!

Hi All,

Last night was my first night using my CPAP machine. It seemed to go well until about 12:30 am when I woke up. I turned on to my side/ stomach to readjust and get comfortable but my mask was pushing against my pillow and leaking air. I tried moving it, moving the pillow, moving myself, but no matter what I did in that same position it still leaked air. I always fall asleep on my stomach, although my husband says I sleep on my back. I can't fall asleep on my back, I've tried many times before. Anyone have any tips on how to lay on your stomach or side without your mask leaking air? Should I tape it to my face or something? Haha ( no, really?Lol)

I did, but that didn't seem to make much of a difference, unfortunately. I know the solution is to just not lay in that position, but then I'll probably never sleep again, lol.

I had that same problem. I'm a tummy sleeper.

My husband found a cpap pillow for side/stomach sleepers. (I think Amazon) It has these cut outs do you aren't trapped in one spot if you move around as much as I do.

But to be honest ...  I tossed that mask on the floor after 1-4 hours the first week.

Oh, I'll look into that! Thank you! I took it off last night after I couldn't get it to stop leaking, I just wanted to go back to sleep. I know it's important that I use it and I don't want to end up taking it off every night, so I'll try anything!

1.  switch to the "mask" that has nostril air tubes instead  2.  tighten the mask straps until the leaking air stops  3. keep trying to condition yourself to fall asleep on your back  4.  ignore the leaking air  5.  stay positive you'll master a technique that works. I never did.

I was wondering about the mask with nostril tubes. I worked with it some more last night and kept it on the whole time, so  I'm hoping I'll adjust as time passes. It's funny that you mentioned ignoring the leaking air, as I did try that too, but it was blowing in my eye and I thought for sure I would wake up with a raisin for an eyeball.  :o)

It took a couple weeks to get adjusted. you can tighten the part that you are leaking from.

I had to try several different masks until I got one that worked.  -- also, I did use the "cpap" pillow until I adjusted.
