Yikes: reactive hypoglycemia

I wasn't diabetic before surgery (thank God) but I had a bit of a scary experience today. For lunch, my group ordered out Italian food. I'd brought my own lunch from home: baked chicken from the night before with one spoonful of rice.

The Italian place delivered great bread along with everything else. You all see where this is going.

I had a roll; well, I removed the soft part of the roll and left the crust. This took place around 12:30pm

At 3:30pm, after I took a walk for about a mile, I came back to my desk...and the shakes started. Shakes, wobbly in the legs, fuzzy head.

I wobbled downstairs to the convenience store and got some Chobani and a cheese stick with salami. It took me 45 minutes after eating it to feel better again.

So now I know. *cue the GI Joe theme here*

Girl, I'm behind you, only 3 weeks post op. But it's too early for you to be eating carbs if you want to lose all your weight. Veterans on here will occasionally eat carbs but only once they're in maintenance.

I understand the head hunger for it, I never met a carb I didn't like, but we've got to stay strong and reach for something else.

Good luck and hope you feel better tonight!

RH is awful. I started with it right at two years out; it's almost like someone flipped a switch.

Luckily, it's very easily avoidable by sticking to protein for every meal, and really - avoiding simple, processed carbs is a must at this point anyway. It sounds like you learned from your mistake.

Every time you want something carby like bread - remember today. A few seconds of "Yum!" so is not worth feeling like death warmed over for a half-hour or longer later on in the day.

Is half of a frozen banana added to a premier protein shake considered simple or bad carbs?

It's definitely not anything I'd have done in my weight loss phase. Bananas have quite a bit of sugar, and even though a half of one may not hurt you, it won't help you either. They're not necessary for us, and in my losing phase, I was hard core protein and low carb veggies, and early out I avoided anything involving fruit. I avoid now it because it makes me feel awful. My body sees most fruit as pure sugar.

I try and I mean TRY to remind myself of how bad I feel but every once in a while I slip up.  I don't think anyone will eat perfectly all of the time and all we can do is try to make this change more and more valuable to us so that we will be more thoughtful in the future!

From too many refined carbs, such as bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice, yes.
