Allulose

I know a lot of people on here have tried quest bars, and not long after I had surgery I loved them also.. But now they nauseate me. I'm not sure if it's a new recipe or what but they are too sweet, and I end up having a stomach ache for hours after eating them.

This morning I read that quest came out with a new product and it contains a sweetener called allulose. It apparently has no effect on blood sugar, but the FDA requires allulose to be counted in the sugar content. This makes me nervous because I dump. Has anyone tried allulose?

A couple of years ago, Quest relied on isomalto-oligosaccharides as their primary sweetener, though it was classified as "fiber."

Last year they switched to soluble corn fiber as their primary sweetening agent, though also classified as "fiber." It is not fiber that passes right through your system, though, but gets digested, and has calories. The taste definitely was altered, but if you ate too many of them, you'd end up with too much gas. Bad gas.

Allulose will be the next big thing in sweeteners. It will be everywhere. Everywhere. It is claimed to be "natural," and CAN be found in nature. But anything you eat with allulose in it will have been made commercially, by the action of enzymes from corn. So . . . Corn. It is low, but not zero calorie.

Soon, EVERY nutrition label will be required to list ADDED sugars, so Quest will be no different than anyone else. And allulose, sucralose, and everything else will be listed differently than it is now.

I think Quest is still testing these, as I haven't seen any bars with allulose in them. That includes the brand new Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, which I liked very much.

Unfortunately, too much allulose will lead to the same issues with excess gas that soluble corn fiber created.

Thank you for this!  I was wondering what Allulose was as well.  Such a smartie, Grim.

Eating these bars - might as well eat candy.  That's what they are.

They really aren't. It's not a black and white world. Quest bars have half the calories, 15 times as much protein, and one-twentieth the sugar of a candy bar. Hardly the same. I'll make that trade any day of the week.

I eat Quest bars regularly. I've been 60 pounds BELOW my surgeon's goal for over three years now. It works for me, in ways that ACTUAL candy bars never did.

Thank you for this. I will second your statement! And thanks for your earlier post on allulose. So if I don't dump from sucralose I shouldn't from this either?

I use mission 1 protein bars nearly every evening as a bedtime snack. I don't like them for regular meals because they don't stick with me like good dense meat. However they work out perfect as a high protein 20 or 21 grams depending on the type snack to keep my sugar stable til morning. They have 200 calories and no sugar and no sugar alcohols and are sweetened with stevia. They don't make me crave other carbs and are easier to digest before bed than meat. I am 30 plus pounds below my goal and have been here for over three years as well. For some of us they may trigger cravings but for me and my journey they work perfect. There is no right answer for everyone and it bothers me to no end when I see spiteful statements like that. My path and journey is not yours and I think I'll keep doing what has worked and given me success.

Hi Grim,

Can you tell me which ones you like the best?  Also, how far out do you recommend I be before eating them?

Thanks!

Melanie

Chocolate brownie is my go-to. Most people also love the chocolate chip cookie dough. I think I was 8 or 9 months and nearing goal before I used them.
