Fresh Veggies

Strange as it may sound, one of the things I'm missing most are fresh summer veggies.  I'm 8 1/2 weeks post-op and as of now diet restrictions have been lifted, but there is a caution that I may not do well on fresh fruits & veggies for quite some time.  When were you able to tolerate fresh fruits and veggies.  I know I won't be able to eat a whole tomato or a big ole salad, I'm talking maybe a slice of tomato or a couple of small slices of cucumber.  The closest I've come to anything really fresh is two itty bitty slices of grilled zucchini (skin removed) and they were YUM!

Another question - my plan says no snacks - just 3 meals a day.  When I can tolerate fresh, would it be terrible to have a small snack of a fresh veggie? (I'm talking really small - like a few slices of something.)

It depends on the fruit or vegetable.  You may find some are fine now and others cause will cause discomfort for a while.  The only way you can find out is to eat a modest portion and see how it affects you.

I don't advise anyone to break with their plan but if you're going to have a snack - a little something to hold you over for a couple hours until the next meal - you can't do much better than fresh vegetables.

My centre recommended slowly introducing raw veggies after month 3. I'm 17 months post-op and I still can't eat mixed greens -- horrible horrible pain. I found raw veggies harder to digest than any of the meats I tried. Whatever you try, make sure you chew it really well :)

I can't have raw veggies till 6 months out and I really miss them too!  I also can't have corn till 6 months out and I crave it in a salad ;(

I wasn't supposed to have raw for 6 months. I did eat some earlier than that and ended up with an ulcer. Not saying specifically that it caused it, but didn't help it either.

I eat 5-6 small meals a day. every 2-3 hours. My surgeon stated that his long term successful patients follow this plan and prior to my surgery,, my PCOS nutritionist said the same. So I would prefer to eat- lol

I was cleared for vegetables at 6 weeks. I have mostly had tomatoes, lettuce and English cucumbers so far with no problems. If I'm hungry between meals I snack on the English cucumbers. Chewed well, a couple of slices are very satisfying.

I am "special" ...it took me8 years to be able to eat and keep down raw carrots.  I tolerate raw, skin removed , cucumbers, or a slice or 2 of tomato (no skin) . Celery - I can eat some with my wings.

but I can eat 12 shrimps or 6 oz of filet steak... or pork loin...

I did raw veggies at month 3. Not much but some, some broccoli and maybe a few carrots here and there.

I had no plan as my NUT was horrible so I can't speak to that. But I created my own plan and ate 4 times a day 3 meals and 1 snacks - as long as I was within my calorie range for the day. So I would be inclined to say if you were within calorie and all other number - carb, protein, etc- range then it would be fine, but that's just me.

Thanks for all the replies.  Looks like 3 -6 mo. is the general thought of when to introduce fresh.  I'm not quite convinced of the 3 meals a day/no snacks.  I know we don't want to get into the grazing habit and would definitely keep calories, protein, carbs in line.  We'll see how it goes and I think I'll ask about it at my next appt.  The time between by breakfast & lunch is 6-7 hours which seems like a long time to not have anything.  I'll still adding a protein shake a day in order to keep protein levels up.

My plan is also 3 meals with no snacks (other than 2 protein shakes).  I can have cooked veggies now (no broccoli or other "gassy"ones) and melon for fruit.  I will be able to try salad type stuff at my 3rd month. I have been really lucky that nothing I have tried has bothered me.  I do weigh or measure everything and chew it well. :-)
