I know this is not a 'pleasant' topic but I am desperate......  3 weeks post surgery and have tried everything.   Miralax, Milk of Magnesia, suppositories and the only thing that works is enemas.  Is it safe to rely on these????  I have been adding the liquid from softstool tablets to my yogurt for a week and no results from that one either.  People keep saying eating sweets gives you the dumping syndrome so do I need to eat a cupcake?????

I'd contact my surgeons office.  It's possible that you have a intestinal blockage of some sort that is making it difficult to pass anything.  I would not rely on enemas to go, they should only be a last resort.

Dumping syndrome has nothing to do with pooping, so unless that cupcake is full of artificial sweetners  it won't help you poop!

I have one word for you ...  magnesium.

Check with your surgeon, but mine gave me the ok to take a dose of miralax daily, plus I take a magnesium tablet daily as well, but I'm a year post op.  The Calcium constipates me, or at least that is what we think it is. Definitely check with your Dr., he or she will be able to guide you.

The Miralax will work, it just takes a few days. Also, at first, when it was really hard for me, I took several doses of Miralax a day. When I had a colonoscopy, they had me drink an entire bottle of that stuff in gatorade in a few hours. After that, I knew that taking 3-4 doses wasn't going to hurt me.

Now I take a full dose every other day... but if I don't go regularly, then I have an extra dose, and BAM... things are moving again.

I swear I had a few kids at first... very painful!

If you've gone 3 weeks without pooping miralax may not work. I would go get the pharmacy and get a bottle of mag citrate. Take 2 dulcolax tablets followed by drinking the mag citrate. This shouldn't hurt you, is part of a bowel prep for a colonoscopy if that makes you feel better.  If that doesn't work a warm water enema should. 3 weeks is way too long. After this you should take miralax daily.

I was having similar issues. Surgeon put me on the Miralax daily. She also had me increase my water by 2. Around 6 months, I weaned myself off of it as I was adding more veggies to my diet as well as more fermented foods like raw sauerkraut and kefir in addition to the yogurt. Now, if I have a day when things are moving well, I will drink a cup (measured) of regular coffee followed by a 1/4 cup of sauerkraut juice (sort of like drinking pickle brine), but apparently the salt and probiotics with the caffeine do the trick for me. I don't recommend it if you have high blood pressure, but mine is scary low most of the time, so I can get away with it.
