Hey there fellow RNYers, was wondering how long it takes for the gas pains to go away? I'm 2 weeks post op and taking gas-x gel caps twice a day, pain is off and on... wanted to see how long it lasted for others.

Thanks so much!

Lots depends on your bowel status. Constipation makes gas pains worse so if you aren't having soft stools at least once a day, you could add miralax once or twice a day. The more you move, the less you sit, the fewer gas pains. Keep up with fluid intake too. I'm 2 months out and need to be mindful of activity and water intake every day. Good luck!

My surgery was last Wednesday and today is the first day that I feel so much better. I think it is due to starting the Prilosec that my surgeon recommends, you may want to ask your surgeon about it.

I had very bad gas pain for about 5 weeks. The pain was in my left side, shoulder and into my back. It started reducing very slowly.

Did you notice if anything you did helped it to go away? I guess I will just keep walking and drinking water! Thanks so much! I am glad to hear it went away.

Nothing I did made it go away. It took it's sweet old time. :(

The pain seemed to go on forever for me, lol. It actually was about a month off and on. You will get there, just remember why you are doing this :)

This may sound nutso...But others have tried these movements and they work for them.  When you say gas...We don't know if you are talking about through your system...Bowels or the gas in your body cavity from surgery?  Here are some ideas to get rid of the gas if it's from the air in the body cavity...Take them with a grain of salt and be careful not to disturb your surgery wounds.

  1. Get on the floor or a bed and roll slowly around on the bed/floor.  Try putting your legs higher than your head.
  2. Rub your belly.  Almost like you would be rubbing out a pulled muscle or cramp.  Just slowly apply light pressure to your stomach areas (go from one area to another).  This seems to move the gas/air along.  Just old wife's/husband's tales...Again, protect the wound areas.  Brian

I did the belly rub a lot last night and it helped a ton. Thanks for the suggestions! I will try the rolling on the floor thing! :-)
