How much time did you take off after surgery?

I am a nurse and am having revision from sleeve to bypass on Oct 17. I took 4 weeks off with the sleeve. The bypass is a bit more involved, plus I am having my gall bladder removed at the same time. I was just wondering how long you all took off and what you do for a living. Just trying to decide how long I want to take. TIA

I have a desk job that also involves some heavy lifting of books. I took one full week off work and then teleworked for 2 more weeks. I went back to work with lifting restrictions after three weeks and was definitely tired. I would have been able to work sooner, but I was tired alot and was glad that I had the chance to rest on my breaks during telework.

I'm a teacher and the Dr authorized 6 weeks off so they hired a long term sub for that amount of time and I took it vbecause of that but I could have gone back after 3-4 weeks. My teaching job also includes a lot of movement because I'm a music teacher and have to also move carts around all day as well.

I had a revision from lap band to RNY and I took 4 weeks. For me I really wanted to focus on the stages of eating and adjust to everything. Physically I could have gone back earlier, but I am glad I took the full 4 weeks

I am having RNY on 9/12 (ack!!!) and scheduled for 2 weeks off. I figured I have a very high pain tolerance and how hard can it be?!?

My director and the schedule coordinator were shocked that I would try to come back that early (they know people who have had the surgery that took 6 weeks off and don't have a very physically and time demanding job like mine). So, they have scheduled me off for 4 weeks and said I was more than welcome to come back sooner if I feel like it.

A few thoughts about this...

  1. How AWESOME are the people I work for?!? They have been super supportive of this journey and I am so grateful for that. I know not everyone gets this opportunity and support.
  2. After some deep consideration, I am taking this time they've given me as a gift. A gift to work on me and to get a good start and build a foundation for a lifetime of a healthier me. I only want to do this once and I will only get one shot. I can never go "back to beginning" and start over.
  3. I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say I get confused when sorting through all of the (sometimes conflicting) recommendations given to me by my bariatric center versus the collective experience and knowledge of the successful vets on this site. I am totally guilty of overthinking things and I will spend some of this time (when I'm not sipping and walking) reviewing all the notes I've taken to keep developing and modifying my "game plan" to keep me on the path to success.
  4. I have a lot of responsibilities and people who depend on me at work. I love what I do and the clients and patients I get to work with. But I will be even better able to help my co-workers, clients, and patients as a healthy, happy person. Also, I'm not indispensable (as much as I'd like to think I am...) :)

So... those are my thought, for better or worse. I look forward to seeing everyone else's experiences here. Best of luck to you!!!!

I had RNY and gallbladder removed. I planned on returning to work on day 9, but my heart rate was elevated even at rest, so I had to take 2 weeks. I am an RN. I'm glad I took off the second week. Good luck with your surgery!
