Hi all,

I am desperate for a cup of coffee.

I am 1 month out from surgery. When can I have a cup? I'll even take decaf.

thanks,

Lisa

Has your program given you on a guideline on it? Just asking, because on my program I've been allowed to have decaf coffee during the entire process. Now regular coffee is a different story, I'll eventually be allowed 1 cup a day, not sure how soon though.

Hi there! As a fellow coffee drinker, I wish I had a perfect answer for you. What did your surgeon recommend?

Let it begin with me.

This is an area where all the programs seem different. I was back on regular coffee at day 7 (although only one cup). It was the BEST cup of coffee I have ever had.

I waited 6 months till I was able to make sure I could get at least 75 oz of water in per day. After that I added coffee. I'm out pretty far and now I do 100oz of plain water every day and 28 oz of coffee. My program never had a restriction on decafe. Hope this helps.

check with your clinic. Programs are all across the board on this issue. Some never allow it again, some people are drinking it before they even leave the hospital. Some people can drink decaf right away but have to wait a certain length of time before drinking caffeinated again (my program said six months - ugh!). Others allow you to drink it, but only a limited amount (like one cup). Or some combination of the above. There seems to be no consensus at all on this...

my program allowed decaf in the hospital (I'm not a coffee drinker) and does not recommend caffeine as it promotes hunger and having more than 8oz of coffee a day is not recommended. Anything over 8oz is considered a diuretic and negated against your liquid intake.

This is an area where there is so much variability - My doc says that I drink so much non caffeinated liquid, 100 oz a day, it more then counteracts the diuretic effect.
