How fast can you drink after VSG?

Hi guys -

Focused on my upcoming sleeving.  I'm a guy that drinks a lot of water, trying to stay healthy, and especially hydrated in this 100 degree heat.  I'm worried about drinking water too fast after the surgery and throwing up.

What's a good tempo?  How much water per how much time is safe?  I'm especially concerned since I'm supposed to drink at least 2 liters (64 oz) a day, but can only do a little at a time.

Any suggestions?

From what I've read on here, it varies a LOT per person. I had to go slowly at first, but I could get down 64 oz per day from the get go. Within a few days, I could drink pretty quickly, not gulping like I used to, but a few big swallows at once.

Others seem to be only to sip. I don't think you'll know until it happens.

As far as temp, it depends. The bariatric coordinator where I had my surgery done was RNY 1.5 years ago and he said he could only do room temp. I prefer my drinks ice cold, and broth warm, but not hot.

Again, I think it's a "whatever works for you" type of thing.

Oh, I didn't mean the temperature of the liquid, I meant I'm worried about staying hydrated because it's 100 degrees outside in the sun.

I drink about 80 oz a day.

I can drink a 16oz bottle in three minutes but that's pushing it. I'll usually do it in about five. If I drink too fast I can throw it up.

I can drink up to the point of eating a meal. But I have to wait at least 20 to 30 minutes before I can resume drinking again. Otherwise I'll get sick.

My plan requires at least 64 oz but I have no problem doing 80.

I'm 6 weeks out and I want to know too- when will I be able to get liquids in faster???  It's such a chore, and so frustrating when I just really want to drink a glass of cool water fairly quick- say after a nice walk on a warm day, or when I'm just behind on my fluids or pressed for time...

It is very frustrating the first few weeks.  You want to just tip up that glass of water and swig 'er down.  But, slow and steady is the best way.  Now, I can get more in and the sugar free popcicles are a great help for getting an extra amount of liquid in.  (Only 15 calories each!)

The sipping is just one of those annoying things that we have to work through.   I used to dring about a gallon of water a day, but that was before my sleeve.  I get in about half of that now and it has been about 4 months.

I'm 3 days post op and have no trouble drinking to stay hydrated. i was a big water drinker before surgery too. The nurses started me off with a 1oz medicine cup after my leak test and had me drink one every 15 minutes, and I had to take at least 4 sips per cup. It actually set a pretty good tempo for drinking. I found by midway through the day I was actually able to drink a few extra ones in between, but it is a good starting place.
Good Luck to you!

LOL when I was in the hospital and the nurse brought me my first tiny medicine cup of water, she told me to sip it over 15 minutes. I finished it in like...8 minutes and had a panic attack, so I didn't drink any more for the next hour.

When I got home initially, I couldnt do more than a medicine cup faster than every 10 min or so comfortably. By the end of the first week, I could do about 12 oz/hour.

Now, three weeks out, I can do about 20 oz/hour as long as I pace myself a little bit. There have been a couple times I drank too fast and knew it immediately, and it wasn't fun, but it was like taking 6oz in a couple minutes.
