VSG Drains?

Okay - so prepping for my surgery on 12/21 and looking at the posts and have a question, what are the 'drains'? I don't remember reading/hearing about this before - or if I did I just blew it off as something else. Please help me understand.

(I've had 3 c-sections so I'm familiar with the pouch when you have a catheter (sp?) is this the same?)

Thanks,
Michelle

A drain is something that some docs use and some don't (mine did).  The drain I had was basically a plastic tube left in me with a stitch or two keeping it in place with a bulb at the end to provide suction.  If you go home with the drain then each day you empty the drain and record the amount in it.  In the end when it's ready for removal the doc snips the stiches and pulls it out.  You can google jp drain to see pictures.

If you google jackson pratt drain you will be able to see exactly what the drain is and looks like. Good luck too you.

That's new to me too. I had surgery the 29th of nov and my doc doesn't use drains. I had 4 staples that he removed 7 days post op and that's it. Might want to ask your doctor so you know for sure if he does make a drain or not. Good luck

I asked my dr this at my preop yesterday.  He uses one but will remove it before I go home and he's planning on me staying 1 night.  It sounds like each doc is a bit different.

I now see that you are in Petaluma -- I'm in Novato.  Hi neighbor!

I had one for 9 days after surgery.  Biggest thing I had to watch out for was accidently catching the bulb on something and yanking the tube. Hooked it one night in my sleep and almost yanked the tube out.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jossart's patient with a surgery date of December 19.  He told me he would not be using any drains - I don't know if he uses them sometimes or not but that's what he told me.  Are you online with My Sutter Health?  You can directly send him a message there and he will answer you.

You can look in my pics on my profile to see one. I have a PC of my staples/incisions and drain.
