carb counts in smoothies - disappointing day!

I went to my local Barnes & Noble today and bought a healthy cookbook.  Then, by sheer habit, I wandered into the cafe area.  Oh boy.  I was thirsty and I'm on full liquids stage (smoothies okay) so I ordered a strawberry smoothie. It has strawberry puree, a banana, 2% milk, and 20 grams of protein powder.  That's it.

So I walked out of there feeling all proud of myself for ordering something healthy and, when I got home, decided to look up the nutritional values on the Starbux website.  60 grams of carbs!! What?

Thankfully I had only drank a little bit so tossed the rest.  I'm so disappointed. Here I was thinking I was doing good and, well.... not so much.

Back to my darn water.  Blah.

In the full liquid stage you will find higher carb counts.. It is okay at this time. When you go on to mushies you will be able to keep the carbs down.
You are doing fine.

I can't tell you how many starbucks drinks I ordered and thew away once I thought about looking up the nutritional value.  The lesson that I learned is that I have NO talent for assessing good vs bad in the food area without using some computational assistance

You can also make yourself lower carb smoothies.  I haven't yet because, even though I'm on pureed/soft foods, the guidelines for me say no raw fruits or veggies.  I'm looking forward to making a smoothie with 0% fat greek yogurt or skim milk.  That alone will help reduce the carbs!

It's a process.  We're all learning the good choices!

There are lots of hidden carbs, lurking, waiting for us to make choices like this. It sucks when you relaize it, but it also awesome to realize it!

I eat veggies now cuz I am further out, but some veggies are lower in carbs (cucumber) and some are sky high (corn!).

Good job on looking it up! There are much better choices available. Liquids will be over in no time.

Our clinic refers to bananas as "the cheesecake of fruits". So if that doesn't tell you something.....I know we all hear "more fruits and veggies" in the diet....but not for recent WLS patients. You have to wait about a good 6 months before you can or should add in fruits. Just know that when you make it at home you're likely automatically cutting out 1/2 of what a retail drink with carbs in it for the other part of the population has.

Make your own with sugar free fruit flavored syrup (like what you'd use for coffee etc), LOTS of ice and skim milk if you can stand it. Throw in a scoop of vanilla protein mix and you've got yourself a winner!!

Save the high carb smoothies for maintenance.  In the losing phase, they are bad news for your weight loss.  Even in maintenance, I try to keep my carbs under 50g a day.  Good luck!

Never leave home without packing appropriate for your stage food items. You should also pack no calorie beverages so you don't get "thirsty" andmake less than good  choices.

Before my surgery I stopped into all these 'healthy' so called places looking at the nutritional value of everything. Nothing was of good value and I still walk by there when I am at the mall and the place is always busy, I would love to try one but I don't think it will happen for a long time. They have little booklets you can ask for that give you the nutritional value, makes you really think of what they put in them that give them so many calories etc...
