Tracking carbs?

I am currently tracking sugar and fat per doctor instructions, but not overall carbs and calories.

I am supposed to be under 30g of fat per day and less than 14g of sugar per meal.  I am easily staying under those marks and am eating around 400-500 calories per day.

What are your targets for carbs and calories?

Please note that I am approaching 3 weeks out ... THANKS!

Yup, I track my carbs. Don't differentiate between sugar, fiber, flour, etc.... Carbs are carbs. I allow myself 40 grams of carbs per day. I'm 3 1/2 months out and I can count on one hand the number of times I've gone over 40 carbs (3 times). Each time I went over it was only by a few AND because I ate something I hadn't properly planned for.

I do not track fat. I'm supposed to eat low fat, which I do. I choose lower fat meats, reduced fat cheese, non fat greek yogurt and use either olive oil or smart balance most of the time when I need to add fat to something.

I went back and looked at my log for the past week to give you an idea of how many grams of fat I eat per day. My range for the last 10 days was 11 grams on the lowest day to 26 grams on the highest day.

Currently, my calorie goal is to stay between 650 & 700 calories a day. I aim for 90-100 grams of protein, staying under 40 grams of carbs per day, and strive to drink between 72 and 80 oz of plain water per day in addition to any other liquids I drink.

At three weeks, I was shooting for between 350 and 400 calories per day, 60 grams of protein and had no reason to count carbs because other than a serving of greek yogurt per day, I wasn't really eating anything with carbs yet. Mostly still protein drinks, soups, ricotta cheese, etc...I was still more focused on getting liquids in.

I have lost 50.5 pounds since my surgery date for a total loss of 73 pounds. I'm pretty darn pleased with that.

Yes.  Carbs in fluids and solids are counted in my plan.

Do folks usually track net carbs (carbs-fibre) like on the low carb diets or total carbs?

The first makes more sense to me since fibre carbs aren't actually available for the body to use (they show up in burn tests as carbs, but we excrete fibre).

Per my nut and research I've done, you used to be able to subtract g fiber from g carbs, recently the world of nutrition has decided that you should only subtract 1/2 of the fiber from your carbs.

For me a carb is a carb is a carb so I count all the carbs I consume regardless of fiber. My plan allows for 600-800 calories a day and a MAX of 50g of carbs, though most keep it under 40.

You have to count everything, regardless of liquid, solid or mushie.

Good luck!
