8 Days Out/Glad to be Home

Today is day 8 postop for me.  Generally feeling well.  My lower back
really hurts, and wearing an abdominal drain.  Drain will be removed
next week.  Got rather poor care at the hospital.  At least three times
during my stay they took too long to come take me to the bathroom
and I ended up peeing all over the bed, the floor and me.  I wanted to
cry.  After that if they didn't come I got out of bed and dragged the IV,
stretching the tubing as far as I could to get there. At least I made it
to the toilet.  Shower time was a real ordeal.  No ho****er and plumbing
that leaked from every connection, squirting in every direction.  I was
shivering so much from the cold I thought I would never get warm again.
Too hard to reach my legs to scrub so just let the soap rinse over them.
I have quit taking my pain medication.  I am doing alright without it.
I love Disneyland, and my husband surprised me with a season pass
as a get well present.  I can hardly wait until I am well enough to go.
I remembered my OH friends telling me how each day gets better, and
they are right.  Now I will apply myself to be as successful as many
of you have been.
Here's to better days ahead!

Today is day 5 postop for me.  I am sorry about the terrible hospital experience, mine was not like that at all.  I am still in pain in my stomach and am still taking pain meds as it makes it easier to get up and walk.  What day did you stop your meds?  Each day does seem easier though today i am a bit tired.  Here's to our new lives!

On the 5th day out I decided to stop the pain meds and see how
things would go.  I kept sleeping elevated, which made it easier
to get up and down.  A little tough at first, but it all worked out.
Once I stopped the pain meds I found I wasn't sleeping so much
and didn't feel so exhausted. Now I am wide awake all day.  I have
a drain, but there is now nothing draining off me.  The nurse is
trying to get me in right away to remove it.  The bruising around
the incisions is quickly fading.  They have me on medication to
prevent gall stones.  I will be taking that for a couple more weeks.
I never needed the medication for nausea.  I am now in happy
dance mode.  Good luck to you.

You will be so surprised at how much better you instantly feel when they take that drain out!
I walked into his office slightly bent over, and walked out standing up straight and tall!  I didn't realize how bad the drain was making me feel.  Just my experience.  Good Luck on your journey!

The drain is annoying me more than anything.  The nurse did call
me back this afternoon and told me I could just walk in and have
it removed tomorrow morning. She told me to take pain meds
before going in because the removal is a bit uncomfortable. I know
I will feel better without it.  Good to hear from someone else
having to deal with a drain.  Best wishes to you also for much success.

I also had a very very bad hospital experience.  They called me a week later for a follow up to ask about the hospital experience and when I started to tell them they said.... I am going to get the Unit Administrator to call you back.  Never heard from them.... My Dr. however was fantastic.

They don't want to hear bad news.  It gets ignored. When I talked to
my doctors nurse today she said she wanted me to file a complaint
with Member Services for Kaiser because this was not a Kaiser
Hospital.  Kaiser just rents operating room space there. They want
to know how their patients are being treated.  I found it hard enough
to tell the nurse because I got so upset and started crying. I do
understand, from a friend of mine who had the same surgery done,
and stayed at the hospital, that she was treated very well.  But, her
husband stayed there day and night (slept in a recliner chair) the
whole hospital stay.  She was treated better because someone was
watching.  She told me that I will get a call to critique the hospital.
We will see.  My doctor and his operating room crew were great. I
just hate complaining now that it is over.  By the way, I have been
to Kehei a number of times.  Whenever we go to Maui we always
make reservations in Kehei. It is beautiful there.

Definitely the best beaches!  Quite a few extra long beaches that are great for walking, cant wait to be able to swim again, water is super warm now.  Really mellow atmosphere as well.  I come from Philadelphia and have been here for 5 years.  My pre retirement present to myself was to move to Hawaii.
