I am 9 days post op, and trying to plan my meals as I go back to work next week.  Is honey a good ingredient to put in oatmeal as opposed to sweetners?  I am trying to find some good breakfast ideas.  I was thinking some lowfat milk and honey.  What do you think?

I think actually neither.  Oatmeal is not the best protein source out there.

Have you thought about greek yogurt?  Cottage cheese?  hard boiled eggs or scrambled eggs and cheese?

With oatmeal you are only gonna get 3 g of protein for 100-150 calories depending on the brand.  If you add honey you are just upping the calories with no additional protein.  With milk, you are upping the calories even further with just a couple of grams of additional protein.

Try to get at least 20g of protein per meal.

I still rarely touch oatmeal at 3 years out much less ventured into that carb devil during my losing stage. Honey is empty calories. It's sugar. I'm not familiar with your post-op eating plan, but I stuck with protein for breakfast, eggs, cheese, deli meats, not sure what stage you'll be at during your return to work, but there's way better options out there versus oatmeal.

Thank you both.  I rethink that one.  It does make sense.

Ditto to all the above. Honey is sweetener, just like all the others. Try lower carb higher protein breakfast like cottage cheese or Greek yogurt with fruit, eggs, leftover meat, protein drink etc. Oatmeal isn't even that nutritious, and full of carbs. Stick to meat, veggies, fruit, fish. Stay away from sweet things, and chemicals, anything with a label and anything that makes a health claim. Best of luck.

I agree about oatmeal not being the best choice.  Also, if it's artificial sweeteners you're trying to avoid, stevia is a natural sweetener that doesn't have the calories and carbs that sugar, honey and similar sweeteners have.  The biggest brand name is Truvia, but there are other, cheaper brands as well.  Good luck on your return to work!
