TMI before you read on :).        Went from having diarrhea the beginning of this week - like often, doc said I could take Imodium. I took half of one pill Tuesday. Have gone one time since then. So probably am constipated? Yesterday only got 41 grams protein in because everything made me so full. This morning have drank two sips of my shake and already feel super full. It feels like its sitting in my esophagus. I don't know what to do. Stool softener?

A lot of people recommend milk of magnesia or miralax.

It takes lots of work to get in your protein this early out, this is why we need our protein shakes for a few months post op. Each day, week and month will get easier.

Sorry you are having a rough time.  Take the shakes really slow - maybe make it a little thinner.  Don't stress if you can't get 100% of your goal this early out - focus on getting all your fluids.

If the shakes just don't work for getting it in, pick up some isopure - it's protein water so you could get that in more easily.

Milk of magnesia is a gentle relatively quick acting solution to your "back-up" issue.

Good luck!

The bathroom issue:
Everyone's "****tail for success" is somewhat different. You'll have to find what works for you. Mine is a colace moring and night and a half dose of Miralax in my protein coffee everyday.
Constipation is a very real and normal part of life post VSG. Once you find your method of relief stick to it.

Getting protein in can be hard early out. Lucy gave you excellent advice. I will only add that it's best to consider your protein like medicine. It's not optional. You have to figure out a way to get it in. You'll be two weeks out tomorrow, so just focus on getting in those three shakes a day (or however many it takes for you to get 60-80 grams of protein). I considered it my job to get enough protein in.

I'm still trying to find a protein I can take in. Everything taste disgusting. So far all I have eaten in Chicken broth and jello. I still can't get more than 6oz of water in. Much harder than i thought it would be. You were also right about Dr. Dennen he was very nice to me. He was very pleased that I was 11lbs below my goal weight before surgery.

Thanks for posting. I had my vsg on 8/23 and was doing great with protein until the diarrhea changed to constipation. I'm struggling with each protein drink. The only thing I want is water. I completely understand what you are feeling. I walked 2.5 miles this morning and played tennis with my son trying to get things moving. I guess it's time for miralax or colace!

www.naturalvitality.com has a supplement called, CALM.

It is a relaxing all natural magnesium supplement, so I take it before I go to bed.  It is also recommended as an anti-stress supplement.  I highly recommend it. It has worked great for me. I'd say to start out with just a teaspoon, or even less of the powder in 2-4 ounces of water before bed.

I hope you get to feeling better soon! Hugs n love, Beth
