Has anyone else GAINED weight when they started working out? I haven't really had much time for activity since my surgery 6 months ago, and now I am trying to make up for lost time at the gym. I do about 30-40 mins of cardio and 30 mins of weight training and squats.

Anyone have some good toning techniques for the gym?

gaining muscle will have you gain weight sometimes.  Can you get a fitness trainer to help you out?  They should be able to help you find a routine that'll help you lose weight and tone up your body.

Yes, I systematically go up on the scale after work outs but it leaves quickly again. If I work out consistently without interruption then it does not go up but it does when I am off and on at the gym.

My suggestion would be pilates.  I will start that soon (trying to get a little more in shape first for the sake of stamina) because the way I'm built I pack on muscle.  I have bodybuilders in my family for that very reason!  Pilates will tone you up and give you the strength training without getting bulky.  If that doesn't suit your fancy, just use less weights and more reps and go to muscle exhaustion.  I was doing that but found it SO boring.

The weight that you gain is mostly from water.  As you muscles break down and then begin to repair they need water to do this.  When I get on the scale right after a workout I may notice a little loss from the sweat but give me a couple of hours and my weight almost always goes back up..  About a month ago I got a scale that measures body fat%, water% and muscle% and it's really helped to give me some idea of what's going on in my body.  My favorite part is slowly seeing my muscle percentages going up and my fat going down.

What she said...

Karen, how accurate do you think those scales are?  I need a new WL toy.

Same here, I started back last Saturday and this morning the scale was up 4 1/2 lbs.  Been working really hard and muscles are sore and I figure it's just that and once I settle into a routine it will go back to normal.

Thanks everyone. My weight seems to be coming back down some. We will see. I have been working hard. Had my second session with a personal trainer, and he majorly kicked my butt once again!!
