How much is too much protein?

I am wondering how much is too much protein in a day. I went to have my after workout snack last night and saw that I was already at 108 grams of protein. I had wanted to have a protein drink but at 30 grams of protein (yes it would have fit in with my calories!) I didn't have it.

So how much is too much?

You'll get some varying answers on here...and, still not sure what the correct one would be.  My hospital told me to be within 60-80grams daily - which is what I do.  Some days I'm the lower end, some days I go a smidge over.  Doesn't your centre/hospital give you a range?  What I do know, is that excessive protein (whatever amount that might mean?) does make your kidneys work alot harder...not sure how that would play out for you, but just something to keep in mind.

You only "need" about 60g-80g in a day. Your body can consume about 10g an hour of whey protein. So in theory when you get above 120g (in a 12 hour waking day) then it might get flushed out or stored in fat.

I have heard some in the body building community say they do a protein shake right before bed so their metabolism stays up for the first few hours of sleep. Not sure how much of that I believe.

You would probably have to get way above 150g a day on a regular basis and be sedentary before it really causes any problems. Now, I'm not a doctor or lawyer and don't play one on TV and this advice is totally free.

So if your body can only consume 10 gr an hour what is happening to the other 20 gr of my protein shake? Is it wasted?

For a women, Take you current weight number divide it by two.  Let's say a person is 230 pounds like me.  Divided by two would be 115.  So that's the max for me.  The minimum should be 70 for a women.  (that minimum)
