What is the typical speed for weightloss after surgery?
This is probably a dumb question as every body is different so the speed of weightloss varies greatly I am sure - I ask this because I have seen posts on this site where people lost 100 lbs in 2 months, 3 months 4 months. My surgeon made it sound as if I could expect that in about one year.
For a 50 BMI, 40 year old woman - what has anyone experienced?
I have surgery in July but just pose the question as it seems so strange to me to see individuals post 100 lb weightloss in 2 months? Is that even possible.
And wanted to know if it has taken one year on average to reach that weightloss or if it is possible to lose a lot quicker with proper exercise and diet.
Thank you for your time!
Kimberly
I was nearly 40 when I had my surgery and had a BMI of 51 (I'm 6'1 tall). I had no co-morbidities and was healthy as an ox (albeit a fat one!)
I've lost 170lbs in just under 9 months, of which 26lbs was in the 4 weeks pre-op. It took me about 3 & 1/2 months to lose the first 100lbs.
But this was much faster than my surgeons other patient stats too. In my mind, I was thinking 12-18 months to get to goal. So being here at 9 months is just a fantastic bonus, but I wouldn't have been disappointed if it had been slower as that was my realistic expectation going in.
I have been losing 15 pounds per month fairly consistently since starting my pre-op diet in January of this year. Even on the liquid diet or post surgery when my calorie intake was very low, I lost at the same rate. I keep my diet under 800 calories a day, carbs under 40 and protein between 80 and 100 g/day. I do moderate exercise every day for about 20 minutes on a recumbent bike. I think the exercise is an important component of the weight loss.
I have "stalls" regularly, but over a months time, the weight loss is pretty consistent. I started out at 388, so I am a large woman, and that means I burn more calories than people who have less to lose.
I think you should be careful not to set expectations so that you get frustrated. Even at 10 pounds a month, you'd lose 120 pounds in a year! And that's HUGE. So make a plan and follow through. You'll get there.
best wishes,
Carol

I can't say that I've ever heard of someone losing 100lbs in one or two months, but I believe I have seen it at 3 or 3 1/2. You always want to check to see if they lost some pre-op... for example, I am one month out today and while my ticker shows a loss of 131 lbs, 106ish of that came in the six month supervised diet (so don't let it fool you lol!)
There are a lot of factors that play into it, age, gender, starting weight, etc. Like I said, today I am one month out and I guess I"m officially down around 24-25 lbs. This is the rate I was losing when I started the supervised diet. Eventually, that slowed to 20, then 15, then 12ish per month. I'm thinking the same may happen now that I'm post-op!
It's so hard to tell how it will come out!
