Does Coffee Dehydrate you?
A common question during the 2 years I've been hanging around this forum.
Now, an answer from scientific research...
No, moderate coffee consumption does not, according to new research. Furthermore, coffee can be counted toward normal daily fluid intake requirements.
"We found that consumption of a moderate intake of coffee, four cups per day, in regular coffee drinking males, caused no significant differences across a wide range of hydration indicators compared to the consumption of equal amounts of water," said Sophie Killer. "We conclude that advice provided in the public health domain, regarding coffee and dehydration, should be updated to reflect these findings."
Killer S.C., Blannin A.K. and Jeukendrup A.E. (2014). No evidence of dehydration with moderate daily coffee intake: a counterbalanced cross-over study in a free-living population, PLOS ONE.

Do you make your own iced coffee?

Yes, I usually drink & prefer my own iced coffee. I like to brew Folder's Dark Silk which is their dark roast. I usually brew it the night before, let it cool and then store them in empty 16oz. water bottles that I take to work. I add 2 tbsns of Coffee Mate SF Vanilla Creamer & 2 splenda. It's just the treat I need! I do prefer to mearsure the creamer since it's pretty easy to over guesstimate.
Sometimes if I'm out and about I will order an unsweetened Venti Iced Coffee from Starbucks with SF Vanilla syrup & a splash of nonfat milk. It's about 45 cals. each. Not bad.

WWBD?
I'm so glad you posted this. I switched to decaf because my program allowed Decaf to be counted towards my water quota, but the cafeinated did not. my hubby said this was myth, but I decided to follow the program just in case. I always struggle with my water intake, and didn't want to risk straining the limits. Maybe I'll switch back now.

According to the article - yes caffeine can be a diuretic, but NOT when consumed in the real world as coffee.
There may be other reasons to avoid caffeine - irritation of the stomach, etc, but many people seem to think they should avoid counting coffee toward their fluid goals for the day (assuming they are cleared to drink it - this post should not contradict your surgeon's advice!) - but hydration should not be the reason to avoid coffee, per this research.

my surgeon ok ed me to drink regular coffee but only a few cups a day , my nut says it does not dehydrate you
I find that If I drink regular coffee in the morning and decaf the rest of the day it helps stop constipation , and I got used to the decaf the first month when my surgeon did not want me to drink regular
