Is the Ghrelin thing real?

During the surgery Ghrelin is removed, true.  BUT did anyone notice that it reduced hunger pangs, cravings etc etc?  I've talked to some sleevers who were like what is Ghrelin.

Definitely real. I am in my 7th month post op and still haven't felt actual hunger. CRAVINGS, on the other hand, are a different ball game altogether. Consuming too many carbs cause cravings like crazy, but those are "head cravings," not "my body is telling me that I need food."

On the other hand, many people say that later on (further out than I am), hunger does return, but it isn't as strong as before surgery. It will be interesting to see how things go for me as I progress, but I am seriously hoping (in vain, I'm sure) to stay like this!!

I personally cannot speak for anybody else, but I am never hungry period.  I have to plan my whole meal plan out each day by the hour so that I don't forget to eat.  I have had days where i got busy and started to feel dizzy and light headed then realized i needed to eat.  So for me, losing the part of the stomach that produces the ghrelin has been a lifesaver.

And to clarify Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid hunger-stimulating peptide and hormone that is produced mainly by P/D1 cells lining the fundus of the human stomach and epsilon cells of the pancreas.  (I got this right from Wikipedia)  That is why maybe some people are confused to what the ghrelin is.

So it is actually the fundus part of your stomach that produces the ghrelin that is removed.

i hope this helps.

I was asking my surgeon about gherkin yesterday and he was saying that it should reduce hunger significantly. He also said that we produce gherkin in both the outer curvature of out stomachs which is what they cut out. But that we also produce ghrelin in our pancreas which will increase eventually because the stomach was cut out. So hunger will most likely come back eventually.

On a side note:

I was talking to a girl who had rny a year ago and she had NO IDEA what malabsorption was!! Crazy to me that people would have such a serious procedure and not know everything they can about it!

isn't it as shame that people will jump into a surgery without knowing what they are in for?  I did a year of research even before sign up for a class to talk to a doctor and even then i was scared and skeptical.  This is a huge life changing event and i want to know everything i will have to endure, and maybe all the possible setbacks.

I am 6 weeks out. I do experience hunger but it is not like it was before. My body starts to feel like it is running out of gas. I grab just a bit of protein and I am ready to go. Head hunger lasts for a few seconds or I tell it to shut up!
