I have a clinic appointment tomorrow but thought I'd ask in the meantime. I just went to shower and brush my teeth and I have a white tongue. Super white right in the middle. It doesn't hurt and I do have a bad taste in my mouth but I thought it was just not having much besides water and protein shakes. Just curious if I'm the only one so freaking weird.

Sounds like thrush. Show it to your doctor tomorrow. You may need some medicine to treat it.

You say that you're drinking protein shakes... Are you also keeping your carbs low too? If so, do you also have a strange taste in your mouth that is almost metallic? If that is the case, you may be in ketosis. This sounds like what is sometimes known as "ketosis tongue." Ketosis occurs when the body does not have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy and resorts to burning fat stores. Many people strive to be in ketosis mode in order to lose the most weight in the shortest amount of time. However, ketosis can, in rare cases, be dangerous for some people. With diabetics, it can (again, in rare cases) cause a coma because ketosis screws with glucose levels (even in the brain). I suggest that you speak to your PCP or your surgeon before you allow yourself to be in ketosis for long. My surgeon actually prefers for his patients to avoid it. I've entered this state several times during the last 7 months post op and have found that I do lose weight a bit faster, but I don't keep my carb #s low enough to sustain it.

What kind of protein do you use? It could be thrush or ketosis, but it could be as simple as a nasty sort of build up protein shakes cause. I get it on my tongue and my teeth, so I make sure to brush after protein and I bought a tongue scraper, too because my toothbrush wasn't doing it.

Happened to me right after surgery.  I read a few postings about ketosis causing it.  It lasted maybe a week? A terrible terrible taste in my mouth went along with it, also about a week and cleared right up.

I had that all the time also for several weeks after surgery.  I think it's from protein shakes (especially if you drink vanilla), and a dry mouth. You could have thrush, but I had the same thing and I never had thrush.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll let you know what I find it tomorrow. Sorry some of you experienced it but it makes me glad I'm not the only one.

Thanks also for the heads up on ketosis. My doctor hasn't mentioned it but I'll be sure to ask.

Sounds like normal ketosis tongue to me, but of course, have the doc check it out tomorrow. I had the same thing for a while after surgery. It goes away (if that's indeed all it is) all by itself as your body gets used to the whole ketosis thing.
