Coming off of PPIs...

VSG on 06/12/13
Is proving easier than I had expected. Since starting this effort about a week ago, I had to do a few pretty heavy doses of Pepcid (ok'd by doc) which I have tapered down to yesterday only needing Tums in the afternoon. I hope to be able to taper them as well, but even if I had no further improvement, I would totally be ok with where I'm at.

I really hope that this clears up my suddenly appearing seafood allergy. That will be the next thing I am going to tackle.

Ppi's = Proton pump inhibitors, a class of drugs that prevents stomach acid.

Our small stomachs don't know they are smaller and so continue to produce big stomach quantities of acid. I am coming off of Prilosec because I believe it has given me a food allergy (plausible, given the literature) and my surgeon says they cause stomach polyps. He is fully supporting me coming off of them.

Laurie - glad to hear it's going easier for you than it did me.  I had some horrible rebound acid attacks when I first went off Protonix...but I soldiered through it.  I'm still having to use Tums once a day or so, but I'm consciously focusing on eating foods that are more alkaline and less acidic.

I just have one of those very acidy systems and will always need to be careful.  But I'm like you - don't want to do PPI's long-term.

Are you feeling increased hunger? I want to get off PPIs as well, but I'm scared I'll get even more hungry than I already do.

No, and even the digestive racket seems to be quieting down.

My surgeon is taking me off my PPI in another month. He says that I should not need it anymore. Also, are you taking a probiotic? Since taking those,I'm now able to eat fish again.

This is a great idea. I need to start this. What were your symptoms after eating fish?
