Interesting Article on Gout

Gout comes up often on the boards - seems like a number of us have suffered at times...

Here's an interesting article on a genetic mutation that may have led to humans being susceptible to gout - it's relevant to obesity as it turns out that the mutation also allows primates to gorge on fruit and turn it into fat - think of eating loads of summer fruit, turning it into fat, and then being able to survive the winter on those fat stores... works great until you can ship fruit (or sugar) year round and you never burn that fat off...

Very interesting article.   I tend to have high uric acid levels and take allopurinol to control it.  The assertion that gout results from a mutation leaves some hope that it can eventually be treated in a more effective manner.
