I'm frankly surprised that your SIL can tolerate the carbonation.  I have a diet coke maybe once every 6 months and then wonder why I did it - I get so gassy and burpy it's embarrassing!

Regardless of whether or not your SIL's doc told her she could eat or drink anything, you know better, right?  People tend to take broad statements and twist them justify their own bad behaviors.  Forget the stretching the stomach thing - there are lots of studies that show that even diet sodas will slow down your metabolism and do bad things to your body.

It is true that after VSG I can eat or drink anything.  But I choose not to.  The surgery is only one tiny tool - 99% of this journey is being educated on nutrition, exercise, and dealing with your emotional / mental issues that led you to getting fat to begin with.  Your SIL has the tool but is choosing to not use it wisely.

Luckily, you get to make your own choices, right?  After a year, perhaps you will be the inspiration to her!

Great answer!

The surgery is a tool, and only a part of the answer.  The rest is all about choices.

I think you know what your answer is and it is that cokes whether diet or otherwise are a no no. This unfortunately, is my BIGGEST addiction. Once while dieting I considered that I would rather drink coke than eat.. that's how strong my addiction WAS. However, my surgeon ABSOLUTELY believes that the carbonation in soda stretches your new tummy out and he hasn't led me astray yet. You will hear differing opinions on this forum about diet coke but the thing is we only have about 15% of our tummy left to mess with. If we screw that up (and perchance he was right that the carbonation stretches the stomache) than all this money, pain, and yukky liquid diet that I am suffering through will have been for nothing because ultimately I think a stretched out tummy (with all it's added hunger pains and cravings) got me into this mess in the first place. So my advise.. stay away from carbonation. Following the results of the girl that lost more weight and still give your sister in law props for her meager successes while putting yourself to a higher level. Ultimately, your success will be all your own!

I tried the carbonated beverages (will be a year out this April) and I simply can't tolerate the bubbles/gas.  Too much pain.  I think every person is different.  Just focus on you and your goal.  You have zero control over her goals and she has zero control over your goals (unless you let her actions influence you).  This is your time--it's all about you right now.  And that's ok.

Well, if the surgeon actually said that, then I'd find a new surgeon.

It is more likely that your SIL is stretching the truth.

I was told that 60% excess weight loss (current weight - Met Life Chart weight)x 60% is average and attainable with the sleeve, some lose more, some lose less.  For a 315 pound person (who should be around 150 depending on height and build) that would be about 99 pounds, so your SIL losing 82 pounds is not BAD at an estimated 49%, but likely not as much as she could lose if she really focused.

Here's the thing - you need to worry about YOUR body - your SIL will do what she wants with hers and you get to do what you want with yours.

Your goal needs to be realistic and healthy too.

Your perceptions are valid, try not to let your sister-in-law drag you into her plan; it's not the best way to use your post-sleeve time.

Use this tool to eat right, move more and get yourself down to a normal BMI.  Don't compromise.

I had to give up my beloved regular Dr Pepper and plan to never start that habit again. I am sticking to this new lifestyle. Now I don't even miss Dr Pepper. Good luck to you.
