gas x strips

I was told I should have these at the hospital with me, but I'm confused.  I was under the impression that the gas they use during surgery has to work itself out ( thru walking) & that gas  x has nothing to do with it. Am I wrong? I have only clear liquids in me...  Should I get the gas x ?

I brought them, but never used them.  I didn't have gas pains either in the hospital or upon discharge.

However, many people swear by them after VSG surgery.  It wouldn't hurt to have them on hand just in case.

Thanks!  Sorry for my question to sound wine-y and urgent.  Guess it's the nerves creeping up on me!

Your question didn't sound whiny and urgent.  Don't be nervous.  This is such a great step that you're taking.   You just want to be prepared.  I get it.  So did I.  I even bought some liquid mouthwash called Biotene that someone had recommended in OH and never used it either.  Like a good girl scout, I'm all about being prepared... just in case

I used them one morning on the fourth day out. I walked a lot and only had issues that one time. I have since thrown the box away.

Good to know.  I have never used Gas X or Pepcid, or even laxatives for that matter.  This definitely is a brand new world!

The Gas X strips aren't going to help dissipate any of the gas (anesthesia) you have in your system from the surgery.  They are only good for intestinal gas. You can have them on hand for gas pains later on down the line, but they truly won't alleviate the gas pain in the hospital.  What helps with that is LOTS of walking and heating pads on any areas where the gas tries to settle (mine was in the right shoulder - ouch!).

I already planned on the walking.  I will pick up a heating pad, just hope I can get it thru the airport in my carry on (not checking a bag).  Shoulder would suck.  Hopefully mine will settle in my butt. I'm used to it being big and a pain to carry around!

Fortunately, for me, I did not have a lot of gas pains after surgery but I did have some gas pains once I started eating.  I used Gas X strips then and used occassionally.  I also did something very stupid recently and they came in handy.  I did not have anything to drink but pop and I was  very thirsty and couldn't get any water.  I drank a can of pop.  For three days I was so uncomfortable and it felt like it kept builing up.  I went and bought some Gas X and it cleared it right up.  I will not drink another can of pop again!!!!!!!!!!
