Need some perspective

I had surgery a week ago tomorrow.  Water is getting easier to get down and I am drinking about 1.5 liters a day.  Shakes are a little more difficult.  I am getting about 16 ounces of shakes.  I make an 8 oz shake with 31 grams of protein and it takes about an hour to drink it.  Then I have one later in the day.  I am allowed 2 snacks like yogurt or soup but I have no desire for that.  I have been walking about 1/2 mile a day, I could do more but my incisions start to ache.

What were you able to get down after a week?

Sounds like you are doing fine.  I remember telling my surgeon that I had to stay up late to get in all my water those first 2 weeks and he told me not to do that!  Try getting in a little more water ( does your liquids total include your protein drinks?) and just make sure your urine is pale yellow to clear.

It will get easier but don't push and I am sure your doc has told you or will tell you at the post op they fully expect you will not meet the goals but to do your best.  4 ounces in an hour, sipping was my instruction.  I am 8 weeks out and my focus at first was making sure I get the protein, just seemed to take forever to get it down.  I started to sip water from the time I woke up until I went to bed and by the end of the second week I was getting at least 60g of Protein and I met the water goals.  I started taking vitamins after 10-days, I do the Fusion chewable (Bariatric, all in one 3 times a day.)

I think the worst part of 4 ounces an hour is that the cold drink gets room temp and the hot drinks get cold.  It is just work and there was no time I didn't have something in my hand to drink.  It gets so much better in a few weeks and along with the weight loss, it's all good!  ~Cheers

my first week was clear liquids only, then onto milk and yogurt and shakes.  i get about 6 tablespoons of yogurt/strained soup a day plus maybe 30 water and 20 milk/shakes.  i have to increase my fluids.  i am just 2 weeks out.

I was drinking 2 x 8 ounces cups of chicken broth with protein powder, and 2 servings of sugar-free jello, also with protein powder.  So I was getting 60 grams of protein a day.  I was only getting about 40 ounces of water a day at that point because I could only take a few sips at a time before it started hurting.

It probably took me 45 minutes to drink my 8 ounces at that time.   My surgeon urged me to drink more water, but said 40 ounces was enough if I didn't get over-heated or exercise too strenuously.  I did worry a lot early out because I just couldn't hit the numbers for water, and I could only fit about 1 to 1.5 ounces in my tummy for a meal even 7 weeks out.  But in retrospect, just do the best you can, and it will get better over time.

best wishes,

Carol

sounds like you are doing fine. i was allowed only shakes, broth or milk. dont do anything that hurts.  pour out only a couple of ounces of shake at a time and keep the rest cold. tastes better d
