Exercise and stamina after surgery

Before surgery, I was walking 3 miles a day or doing a Leslie Sansone DVD for 3-4 miles if the weather was bad.  I had surgery 3 weeks ago today and I have barely exercised.  I was afraid to be out on a walk and be too far from a bathroom with the diarrhea issues I was having.  When I did try to walk short distances my incisions would start to ache.  This past Thursday, my friend and I walked a little over a mile.  I was whupped!  Today, I plan on getting back into my routine.  Should I start slowly?  My house is on a hill and I'm afraid that on my return trip I won't have the strength to walk back up it.  Lol

Definitely start slowly.  I started just walking "laps" around my street and then switched to the treadmill at the gym so I'd be close to a bathroom.  Thankfully the diarrhea subsided once I was able to switch to pureed foods.

Good for you!  Yes, start slowly.  If you're afraid of the hill, try just walking on flat surfaces for a week before increasing to hills.  There are so few options for exercise in the first few months post op--mostly just variations on walking.

I just went back to the gym yesterday--I had surgery 2 weeks ago.  I stuck to the treadmill and kept my speed a bit slower than I was used to, but I added a little bit of a hill for part of the walk.  I got in 30 min.  I usually would do about 20 min, then weights, then another 10-15 minutes on the treadmill, but since we're on a lifting restriction I just stuck with the treadmill.

Uh, yeah, start slowly.

Your body just underwent major surgery.  It's using most of its energy to heal you internally.  If you tax it at this stage, you'll feel exhausted and you won't do yourself any favors.

Exercise is great, but just don't pu**** at only three weeks out.  There will be plenty of time to get back and improve your exercise regimen.  Let your body heal.

Start slow...when I go out I always get to far away from comfortably getting back to the beginning.  Even in the mall.  I think it's better to try 10 minutes out and then 10 back.  Next time add 5 minutes if that went okay.  I keep laying myself up for days because I did way to much trying to get back to where I started.

This is exactly what I did.  I walked "laps" of my street (1/4 mile****il I could walk 4 of them.  I added one lap each time.  Then I switched to the treadmill at the gym and started at 30 minutes.  I added 5 minutes each time until I got to an hour.  Now I'm working on increasing my speed.  .1mph at a time.

Slow and steady improvement will keep our bodies from rebelling too much :)

I did too much Saturday on a date day with hubby.  Then Sunday went to church and we did some shopping errands.  I came home and slept for 4 hours.  Went to bed at a 11pm.  Woke up at 10am this morning and haven't moved from the lazy-girl chair.  You push and you end up losing.  I am the poster girl for this.

No it never has been.  I'm trying and learning. It's driving me nuts though.

I am 5 weeks out and I had no stamina for the first 3 weeks or so. Before surgery I was jogging a few miles 3-4 times a week. After surgery walking a mile was exhausting. Now I am back to jogging 2 miles a day, but that has only been the last week. I hope to get back up to doing 5ks in a couple of weeks. Don't push, but keep exercising!
