Hello!  My mother is 74 and considering the sleeve.  She is 4'11'', 190 lbs.  She has wrestled with her wait since the 70's.  She has seen the relative success I have had thus far, and is encouraged to potentially do the surgery.  She is also considering lap bad.  Whe met with my surgeon, and he agrees that this would be beneficial to her.

If you know of anyone who may fit her demographic and has had any experience, I would love to share your feedback or advice with her.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

I was in my mid 60's and I came thru the surgery just fine - Not much pain, good recovery, good success with the weight loss.  I know one woman in my support group who got the sleeve when she was in her 70's.  the Surgeon told her that in most cases it works out fine.  But if you have complications when you are older, they can be more severe and harder to recover from.  She did great.

Best of luck with your mother.  I'd say that if her weight is impacting the quality of life, then go for the surgery.  That was my criteria for deciding, and no one expressed any concern about my age.  I  wish her the best.

Carol

My mom had a triple bypass at 75.  I would think a sleeve would be easier than that.

Please do not let her get the lapband!! It is a horrible experience. There are so many foods you can't eat, mostly the healthy ones! It is the least effective weight loss surgery most folks lose less than 20-30 lbs if they lose anything. It also causes long lasting damage to the esophagus and stomach. I've had mine removed and still suffer 24/7 from stomach damage. My stomach doesn't empty correctly now and hurts all the time from food backing up. So please if you care at all about her don't let her get a lap band, even if you have to drag her away from the surgical room!
