Vacation after VSG? How long?

With my surgeon's permission I flew round trip from New York to Los Angeles ten days after surgery.  It was a round trip in one day for work purposes.  He gave his permission based on my promise to get up and walk in the aircraft frequently.  I moved around as much as I could in my seat when the seatbelt sign was on.  I'm three weeks out and in the past week I've found myself really, really tired so I don't know that I'd feel up to driving eight hours at one time but if you do, please make sure to get out of the car and move around frequently while on the trip.

I did an 8 hour road trip a month after surgery - I was a little uncomfortable but it wasn't unbearable.  I was cleared for swimming and such at 2 weeks post op - but that depends on how your incisions are healing.

I had a really easy recovery and was parenting my 2yo & 3yo just fine my first week post op - but I was tired too.  I would not attempt a solo vacation driving 8 hours with 2 kids at the beach at 2 weeks post op.

If you are having dehydration issues (b/c getting in all your fluids post op can be a challenge) - sitting on a hot beach is NOT what you would need to be doing!

I'd push the beach vacation out to a month post op.

I think that expecting yourself to drive for 8 hours so close to surgery would be unsafe and unwise.

At 5 weeks I went to NYC for the middle of a week and it was fine, but I a) took the train and b) was able to eat soft foods at that point.  I couldn't have driven, especially on the way back since I was wiped out.  And I wouldn't have been good company to go before I was able to eat "real" food.

I think you shouldn't consider it.  Wait a few extra weeks.

Talk to your surgeon.  Mine told me I could travel the day I left the hospital.  He just cautioned about blood clots.  He said to stop every hour and stretch my legs for about 30 seconds.  I took a 4 hour trip about 3 weeks out and I had no problems.

I had zero complications from surgery and my incisions healed very quickly.

No on the pool.  I wasn't allowed to submerge my belly until 6 weekspost-op.

Also consider these things:

Will you be lifting more than 10 pounds?

Will you be able to eat/drink what you're supposed to when you're supposed to?  Immediately post-op isn't the time to shake up a routine; it is the time to establish the routine and habits you will need to be successful.

Ditto on the holding off.  You have a lifetime to take vacations but only one chance to heal from this surgery without "causing" complications.  No use taking the chance.  It could all go fine...or it could all go horribly wrong. Look to the end of summer for vacation plans :)
