Sipping....am I do it wrong?
I had my education class yesterday and the lady told us some of the things we could start doing now so later it's easier. So today I started sipping. I don't know if it's because I haven't had the surgery yet or what but I don't think I'm doing it right. I didn't think there was a "wrong" way to sip :) but I feel like I would be swallowing a lot of air. The lady explained it like drinking a hot drink. You would only take small sips. I get that. But do you take one sip then take the cup away and then take another sip or can you take small sip, swallow, small sip swallow right after each other.
Ok wow, I think I'm totally overthinking this.
I was confused about this too at first dont feel bad lol.. I am 5 weeks post and I can take a drink, swallow, wait a few secs, take another.. I did sip the first cpl weeks.. I would sip, wait a few secs, sip again.. It gets easier as time goes by.. Remember water cant really "hurt" your sleeve.. Well it might if you guzzle a ton at a time.. but I think you would puke before anything..
Yeah, your over thinking this aspect (but thinking and preparing is a great idea - keep asking questions.
Pre-op practice is good but it's very artificial. For example, I work on the phones all day and started taking a *sip* between each call. It was more like a normal swallow, but I tried to get in the habit of reaching for the water.
Post-op, your sleeve will tell you how big of a sip you can take. If you get a little extra air, you will just get a little burp to follow :) I burped a lot the first week and not at all this week.
All the talk about sipping is that if you get behind on liquids now, you can quickly drink a cup of water, post op you cant. Also, just like our bodies are full of water, food had lots of water. Because your food intake will be cut almost 100% those first couple weeks, you will also miss out on all that moisture from your food.
Good luck!
