EWL is the difference between your starting weight and your goal weight (or weight for a normal BMI)

5'10" Male : Consult Weight 428 1/16/14 : Pre-op m1 -3, m2 -12, m3 0, m4 -27 : SW 386 : m1 -25, m2 -22 m3 -15 4 -12: LW 278 CW 320 : Total Loss 108

1. Take your starting weight and subtract your goal weight.  For example, 300 - 175 = 125.  The 125 pounds is how much you need to lose, or excess weight.

2. To determine your precent of EWL lost take how much you have lost and divide it by the answer from step one.  This will give you a decimal, slide the decimal to place values over to get your percent.  For example, if I lost 25 pounds out of the 125 then I would enter on the calculater 25 divided by 125 = .20  so.... 20% lost.

I used these calculators to figure out my ideal body weight.  Then I subtracted that number from my high weight.

Hey there:-),

Those are the ones I used.  They are confusing as it has so many 'ideal' wts from people, drs, met life etc.  At 150 im in the ballpark but my head is saying 145.  I don't know about that one.

My head is a mess with this goal wt jazz...for real. Im going to see my original surgeon as he is back state side now and back to surgery. He is in the armed forces as well.  He hasn't seen me since 3mos post op.  Ive been seeing his partner who assisted in my surgery and he told me to stop when I saw him at my 1yr post op at 170/173.  I trust them both but being a former band patient,  my surgeon saw me and got to know me 3yrs prior to my vsg.

I fear bounce back/regain so much which might be whats pushing me to go lower.  I think that's probably it.  I think I said it to Frisco or one of his posts a while ago...my way of eating isn't going to change much when maint occurs.  I don't want it to.  For the first time in my  life, even with 10 yrs banding, food doesn't rule me, my moods etc.  I may be recanting my statement at 3 yrs out but Lord have mercy I sincerely hope NOT.

Thanks for the link!

Actually, you are supposed to use BMI of 24.9. That's if you are talking about studies and comparing between surgeries and stuff. That's why they say average EWL for most of the surgeries is 60%. Because most people don't get into the normal BMI range. Most people end up in the 25 to 29 range.

That's also why you see people saying "I lost more than 100% of EW" because they got down to a BMI of 22 or something.
