Ugh here we go again... I'm 5 days post-op and I can't sleep. I laid in bed for what seemed like FOREVER last night before finally falling asleep. Tonight it's even later than last night and it seems like sleep is no where even close! Just wondering if anyone else had sleeping issues after surgery and what/if you did about it.

I was/am in the same boat.  Maybe a week after I had the surgery, I noticed that I would lie in the bed and try to fall asleep, but i couldnt.  Once I did fall asleep, I would only sleep for a few hours. If I woke up the go to the restroom or get something to drink, I couldnt go back to sleep.  I would stay up and watch TV for hours.. It's crazy.. I dont get much sleep, but Im not tired either. I try to exercise to wear myself out, but I really dont get tired enough to just fall asleep. I still just lie in the bed, waiting to fall asleep.  The one good thing about it is I dont snore anymore... I basically just deal with it..

Sleep???  What's that???  I go to bed and my brain just keeps going and going and going.  My doctor recommended taking Benydryl (sp?) to help - I plan on picking some up.  That, and I definitely need a new mattress!

I could have posted this last night. Had surgery last Thursday. Total, awful insomnia. I can't offer any solutions but at least you know you're not alone.

I am one week post-op today and I am having the same problem.  I am tired but cannot sleep.  I have taken the pain meds just to try to rest but that doesn't work either.  I have been up this morning since about 3:00.  I am already back at work so I know it will be a long day!

That is one of my (only) complications from surgery. At first I ignored it thinking it was my new sleeping position, aches and pains from exercise/muscle soreness, or mental alertness from all the life changes. I mentioned it to my doc in passing and found out it is common post op. They thought it had to do with our metabolism being in overdrive or the body recovering/healing from surgery. I've found it continued to get better with time. Two nights ago I unfortunately got only 3-4 hours of sound sleep. Last night I was almost back to normal sleeping a well needed 8 hrs.

Hey Laura! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am 7.5 months post-op and still sleeping terribly! Immediately after surgery I had trouble falling asleep. Now I fall asleep but don't stay asleep more than 6.5 or maximum 7 hours ever. Normally more like 6. I have energy though which is weird. But man my eyes are tired every morning! I sometimes take half of an Ambien or a Benadryl before bed and it helps! My surgeon had no opinion on my lack of sleep. He acted like he has never heard of this before. I know it's related to my surgery since that's when it started.

That being said, even sleeping 6 hours a night I feel better than EVER! So no regrets here :)

Thanks guys for not making my feel like the Lone Ranger, that's why I LOVE coming on here. I FINALLY fell asleep around 2:45 and woke up ready for the day without an alarm at 5:55. Like y'all said I'm not really tired right. I just want to sleep when I'm supposed to sleep!

I actually slept SUPER well for the first 3 months post-op, then my insomnia came in full force and knocked me on my ass.  I started taking 5HTP a few weeks ago, since it's the only thing that has ever helped my insomnia, and I'm doing a little bit better now.  I should notice more of a change in a few more weeks.

I've taken ambien for years and usually it helps,  but even in the hospital after surgery and with pain meds I only slept 2 hours. Lately I've been taking a 5mg pill and it was working maybe 4-5 hours. Took a 10 mG last night and slept maybe 6 or 7. None of the over the counter stuff works for me.
