Do I need to drink all the shakes? (Pre-op)

I've been on the shakes for about 5 days now. My bariatric center recommended 4 x shakes per day, but I'm really only drinking 3 (not hungry for the other one). I'm drinking my water (64+oz per day), but with all tha****er I'm not hungry to drink a 4th shake.

Should I choke it down to make sure I get all the protein I should have?

Surgery is Friday the 8th.

It might be best to call and ask, just to be on the safe side, but I think that as long as you're not feeling weak and poor, it's okay to only drink 3.  I think the 4 is a maximum recommendation, not a requirement in this case.  But if you start to feel weak, drowsy, etc, drink the 4th one.

(I'm assuming you're drinking a high quality shake with 25+ grams of protein.)

I am starting my shakes tomorrow and would like to hear if others did not drink all their shakes.

My doc wants me to do 5 shakes a day for 2 weeks

Surgery is Monday the 18th

I couldn't stomach the sweet shakes after surgery, so I'd put protein powder in everything, and I made my numbers without any shakes.  I'd put protein powder in chicken broth, cream soups, yogurt, sugar-free jello,  sugar-free, fat-free puddings, mashed cauliflower,  basically anything I could stir.  I think that if you are careful to get your protein and water in, it doesn't matter that you don't drink 4 shakes a day.

best of luck,

Carol

Call and ask.  I was on a different pre-op diet.  I had 3 shakes and 2 bars per day plus unlimited vegies and 3 oz of meat.  I was told that the shakes were important to keep the protein high and get you into ketosis.

I was given an Optifast diet for three weeks pre-op. The Opti shakes consist of four shakes per day.

We were told, in no uncertain terms, to make sure we drank every shake. The reason for that is because only by getting all four shakes in, were we getting the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that our bodies needed before surgery. So essentially if we skipped a shake, it was 1/4 of our vitamins, minerals and nutrients that we weren't getting in.

I confess, after three weeks, I had about 7 or 8 shakes left. There were days I was tired and went to bed earlier than usual, so I simply didn't stay up long enough to get in the fourth shake.

Check with your center. They may have some guidelines or information for you. But on the whole, if they said four per day, yes, they mean four per day.
