What do you miss post surgery and what do you love now???

Your relationship with food may change to help.  About six months ago I was cooking an egg beaters omelette for lunch.  My wife came in sporting some of the finest cupcakes in the city.  I looked at them and thought...wow those look good... but I really just want my omelette.  That would NEVER have happened before I got the sleeve.

I just got my sleeve last week, so I'm not missing much yet...and the things that have got to me are strange.  I wanted to eat a Cheerio the other day when I was getting my kids cereal for breakfast.  I sat in the living room and cried while my husband made biscuits and gravy for Sunday breakfast.  I know I'm going to miss having a drink with my friends, enjoying some delicious fried foods, going completely over board cooking for my kids' birthday parties.

But, the things I'm looking forward to...being able to wrap a normal sized towel around me, being able to wear normal shoes, being able to jump on the trampoline with my kids, shopping in normal stores, being comfortable on an airplane and at the movie theatre.  Oh, I'm going to miss popcorn at the movie theatre. :(  But, I know it will all be worth it.

I still eat (a limited amount of) popcorn at the movie theater--something like 2 cups. That does the trick for me, and feels like a wonderful indulgence without being harmful to my day's calorie count.

I thought I was going to miss wine and beer, and I do, at times, but not as much as I anticipated.  I can still have both in small quantities, but I find my weight jumps up after consuming alcohol, so I find I prefer the weight loss to the drinks.

I love being able to walk and keep up with others.  I love that my joints don't hurt.  I don't have to feel that shame of being obese.  I also find I appreciate the small quantities of food I can eat more than I did when I ate a lot.  And that first bite of desert is the best.  I don't really need more than a taste - and I can have a bite of anything!

Sometimes I'd like to sit down and eat a whole big piece of chocolate cake, or have the bread at my favorite restaurant, or eat chips and dip.  But I choose not to...  It is always my choice.

I think you will love your sleeve and your new health and energy and the rest will be well worth the loss.

best wishes,

Carol

I'm almost 5 months out and I can't say I miss anything.  Honestly.  Not a single thing.  There is nothing I want to eat that I can't, but a lot of things I used to love I haven't had any interest in.  I have had sushi a few times though, and that's still awesome.  I haven't had any interest in pizza, pasta, or ice cream though, which is sort of shocking.  (Disclaimer: I've never been an alcohol drinker.)

Now?  Now I love exercise.  And I love just wanting to do more things.  I hate sitting still, I just want to move all the time.  I love this new body of mine :)

I'm with you on the hating to sit still thing...I REALLY hate sitting for long periods of time now.  It's actually painful for me to do it now.

One year out today....... not much I miss except the occasional bowl of spaghetti.  I still steal a bite now and again.

I love not being overwhelmingly hungry and knowing that my hard work pays off in big ways.

One more add on............  the Social Thing.......

The best way I can describe it is like being sober at a bar where everyone is doing shots.  Chew gum, sit back, and watch the food insanity happen.  Just like a bar, friends at tail gates and other places will tell you to have a taste and you will have to say no.

Think of it as food sobriety.  When you get past the first few times, it becomes pretty entertaining!

Wait until Thanksgiving........... the food orgy will commence and you will be sober!

Good luck with your surgery.  I am one year in and wished I would have done this years ago.
