Discouraged to the point of exaspiration

I am beginning the third month after surgery and I have lost virtually NO weight in the LAST MONTH!  I keep a detailed food journal.  I am existing on 400 to 500 calories, 18-20 carbs. a day and, in order to get the protein specified, and with calorie/carb. requirements, I depend largely on disgusting protein powder shakes (ordering by mail the "proper" ones, not from the grocery store).  Thus I can eat very little real food, even though I am at the stage in which I should.  I am beginning to wonder why I subjected myself to this surgery and diet if I am not even going to loose weight.  This does not seem like a "temporary" lull.  Is it usual to stall for such a long time?  It feels like this is my fate for ever.  I haven't been able to get any definitive answers from my doctor's office, just empty encouragement to keep with it....which, when it comes right down to it is all I can do.

What were your losses the first 2 months?  What have you lost so far this month?

if you look at my signature, my 3rd month was my lowest loss month overall.  There is just something about how our bodies work and by the 3rd month - it kind of freaks out and tries to hold on.  If you really are at those calorie levels while meeting your protein and water goals - keep at it.  The weight will come off - even if it seems slow.

first it is very normal to have a long stall around the 3 month

you should be eating food , shakes are only a supplement, I love to eat 2 egg omelets with 2 oz of smoked salmon

it is 270 cal but 27 gm protein and taste great

you should be on all foods by now and if you can't eat solid food you need to call your surgeon to see if there is a problem

anyone pasted the purried stage and most on it should be able to eat a soft boiled egg

How active are you?  After 2 months, my weight loss slowed.  Then I joined a gym and started walking and doing weights and my weight loss has increased dramatically.

I'm no expert, but 400-500 calories sounds too low to me.  It sounds counterintuitive but you might need a little more to keep the engine running properly.  Have you talked to your surgeon and/or NUT?  Hang in there - you'll get it sorted out and be back to losing pounds soon!

Hi,

If I am doing the math right, you are starting the third month, so you are about 9 weeks post-surgery.  If you haven't lost anything in the past month, that means you stalled around week 5 - that's a little later than most.  Most people see the first stall in the third week.  But it is common -- our bodies lose a lot immediately after surgery, and then the body needs some time to readjust.  try not to worry about the number on the scale if you can avoid it.   If you follow your plan and eat less calories than your body burns, you are burning fat, no matter what the scale number says.  So hang in there.  You'll see the results.  This WLS really works if you follow the plan.

I would also recommend talking to your NUT and see about getting more calories in with some good, lean protein. Grilled chicken breast, ground turkey, fish, etc. I still have one protein shake a day (Premier Protein Chocolate) to fulfill my protein requirements because I still can't eat a lot of food! And I'm almost 8 months post op. Good luck to you, I hope you can get out of that stall!

Although I may be out of place as I'm not post op but 400-500 seems really low. Regardless please take the advice of all the Veterans of the surgery and don't give up something will turn around, you can do this Chin up If you truly are following the plan something has to give :-)

Hang in there, it will turn around.  Try eating more eggs, greek yogurt, kefir and soup with plain soy protein powder mixed in.  Even refried beans with a little cheese is fine in small portions.   not sure how much protein you are getting but imh its ok to get only 60 or 70g.  my weight loss was slowest in month 4  and then gradually picked up.  many people have these stalls and go on to reach goal.   diane

Have you taken measurements? Many people slow at this time but the inches lost will astound you. I personally think it happens so you don't focus quite so much on the scale as your body gets used to its new self.

hang in there and grab a measureing tape.
