Question about a planned cheating episode during pre-op diet

Hi all,

I am going to have the VSG on 19 September.  I decided to get a head start on the pre-op diet, so I have been doing it for 10 days now.  I have a protien shake in the morning, a high protien, low carb lunch, and then a shake for dinner.  On none of the 10 days have I gone over 1500 calories accodring to MyFitnessPal, so I am very pleased.  I have not weighted myself, but my clothes definately feel looser, and my ankles are not swollen at the end of the day.  All good things.

I have a relatively low (by WLS standards) BMI already, at just over 38, and by the time surgery happens, it will be even lower.  I am eligible for surgery due to co-morbidities.

My question is about a potential diet cheat that I have to decide on.  I will be married on 13 September.  Only 6 days pre surgery, and I was wondering if it would be terrible to have a small piece of wedding cake?  I can't imagine it mattering too much, since I will have been following the pre-op diet for well over 5 weeks, and I have not had any cheats yet, so my liver will be shrunken quite a bit anyway.

Should I call and ask the clinic about this, or is it someothing that can be answered here?

It's your wedding!  Eat the cake!  (a piece of cake that is, not THE cake)

ENJOY the cake.  There are "real" special occasions, and there are "manufactured" special occasions.  This is a real one.  So have the small piece of cake.

I am three months post-op.  I stick to my plan 99% of the time.  But I know that I will have pizza, bagels, fettuccine al-fredo, etc. again before they put me in a grave.  It will be a "taste" once in a while.  Difference is, those will be treats I will have once in a blue moon and they will be planned.   Gone are the days of drive-thru windows, pizza deliveries, KFC extra-crispy buckets, Chinese buffets, bagels by the dozen, etc.  Most of us are not 100% "perfect" -- but we have made the commitment to stick to our programs.  My SO continues to try to push "treats" on me - I'm strong enough to say no -- don't even think about giving in.  But I have had "a piece" of KFC, a half-slice of cheese-steak pizza, etc.  I don't beat myself up over it.  There's no comparison to my pre-surgery eating habits, and my post-surgery eating habits.  I take the time to care for myself now.  I spend time trying new "healthy" recipes that fit into my new healthy eating.  I recognize now that I am just as important as everyone else, and I don't deprive myself of my happiness.

Happy Anniversary!!

If the diet you're on now is voluntary, eat the cake. Don't think of it as cheating, that's a useless mindset to be in and only serves to continue a bad relationship with food. Just think of it as a less than optimal choice that, in moderation, is fine.

If your diet is required by your surgeon - I would call and ask permission.

Right now it is voluntary, but by the time the wedding is here, it will be mandatory.

I'd adhere to the diet my surgeon required.

I just love all of the supportive encouragement that you have received above from previous posters! It sounds like you Arne doing a great job already. Listen to your body and make the best choice available to you at the time, meaning when the day and time comes if you want a small pieces of cake go for it. You may find that you either have no desire for it or that you only actually want a spool fool. Don't obsessive over it or even think that you are "cheating" you are making "dietary choices" that day like you do everyday based on your mind and body. Listen to your body and be totally okay with that decision.

congradulations!

I'd talk to your surgeon.  I think they would be ok with it, but it is good to run it by them.

Enjoy your wedding :)

Eat the cake.

Let your surgical team know, and be aware that it may trigger cravings, but IT IS YOUR WEDDING.  Impulse treats are not a good idea, but a planned treat like this -- yes, it sounds like you've got things under control, and you want to enjoy that day and have nothing but happy memories.
