Am I exercising enough?

My biggest issue in the past was getting the motivation to work out.  I hate getting all sweaty and smelly and as the weight packed on it became harder and harder to exercise.  I'm about 3 weeks post op and I haven't lost as much as I'd like thus far.  My work has a gym that I am going to be using once I go back to work but as of right now I'm exercising once a day, a 30 minute walk around the block which is about 1.2 miles.  I do other things around the house such as light cleaning and my boyfriend and I play darts a lot which keeps me on my feet.  However, my only true exercise is my 30 minute walk.

Should I be doing more? After my walk I feel like I reached my limit and I feel like I got in a good workout but I'm seeing posts about people that are newly post op and walking 3 times a day.  I know I shouldn't compare myself to others but it's difficult when the scale isn't going down.

You are doing better than I was at that point.  I really did not get moving until 2.5 months post op.  At your point, my doctor recommended 30 minutes a day.  So, I would say you are doing fine.

I am also almost three weeks post op. I try to walk 2-3 miles a day split up over 3 times.I do morning, lunch, and night walks. I am not allowed to lift over 10 lbs. so doing much more would only hurt me.Pace yourself and rest when you need to. I also am out of work for another 3 weeks so I am starting to go stir crazy. Keep walking, it's the best thing for you right now. Good Luck.

I think you want to incorporate exercise that is maintainable in the long run. Try to find something you enjoy and do that!

At 3 weeks out, walking for 30 minutes a day is great.  Going to the gym at work will be good too, but make sure you work yourself up to more than just walking.

Yep, you have to start working on heart rate.  When I first started, walking 2 miles in 40 minutes would get my heart rate over 140.  6 weeks later, about 120.  I have to up the pace to get to 145-150 now.  Weights develop muscle which will burn calories even when not working out.

Eventually I want to transition from walking to running because I ran cross country in high school and distance running was something that I enjoyed.  I also can't wait until I'm further out so that I can do weight training to reduce the chances of excess skin I want to get into wall climbing, another fun activity.

Thank you for your tips and suggestions so far, they are really helping me out!

You are doing good for 3 weeks out. I started moving faster at about 4 weeks (when my incision didn't bother me). Now I'm on week 5 (I do it when I can... I'm a mom, work full time and attend college too) for couch to 5K and I plan on running (jogging really) 2 full 5K's next month. Try looking for a 5K locally that is scheduled for 4-6 months (or whatever you deem is a reasonable time frame for you) so that you have a goal to work towards. That has really helped me. Good luck!!

My doc said not to worry about exercise for 6 weeks. I'm almost 3 weeks out and I'm so weak and tired I can hardly do laundry.

I think it's fine for how far out you are, but you should think about setting up a plan for working in more exercise as you go along.  if you want to get the most out of it you want to do something consistently (daily) and something that you can steadily increase intensity as time goes on.  30 mins walking outside is good now, but as the weight comes off ... that's going to do less and less for you.  Every month you should be stepping up the intensity or adding something new.  ramping up the incline on the treadmill, increasing speed by .5 mph, adding weight lifting, adding a couple of classes at the gym, etc.  30 minutes a day is like the bare minimum for a healthly lifestyle, if you want to help lose weight and retain/build that muscle mass you gotta keep pushin!  :)

I started walking 5 minutes a day post-op and added 5 minutes every day until I could get to 60.  Then I worked on walking faster.  Do more if you can, don't if you can't.  :)
