Not drinking after is tough

Starting my 3rd week, now onto mushy foods.  I find it hard to not drink for 30 minutes after I eat something, however, when I tried to take a sip it sort of stuck there.  Will this ever go away or will I never be able to drink while I eat?

No more drinking while eating.  That's the price we paid .

I'm certain that you would technically be able to drink while eating, although it is a terrible idea. Frisco posted some great info about how the pylorus works. It is definitely a good read and really defines why it is imperative not to drink during our meals.

I was told long before surgery that I would never be able to drink while I eat and to wait at least 30 minutes (I wait at least 60 min) before drinking anything.  There are very good reasons for this!  Drinking while eating pushes the food through your stomach much faster so you don't feel as full for as long....meaning you get hungry sooner.   You don't want that.  And believe me, it also causes a VERY uncomfortable feeling.

If you must drink do so right up until it's time for your meal.  But then nothing again until you are at least 30 minutes past the meal.  You'll preserve the restriction that you paid a lot of money to get :-)

Tracy,

Thank you for the information that you posted today. I will use your 60 minute rule too. My surgery is going to be this winter. I want to be as successful as you have been. You are my idol.

This was a hard one for me..

not that I felt the NEED to drink while eating

but the HABIT of it was hard to break..

what I finally did was I don't set a glass at the table for myself or my hubby

I set for the kids but they have to fill it themselves..

This will never go away.

It's something your surgeon's office should have explained to you.  As Tracy said (and I agree), I will drink up to the moment that I start to eat.  Then I try to wait 60 minutes, not 30, before I drink anything.  It's very important because the dense proteins you'll start eating soon need time to process in your stomach and flushing them out with fluids will diminish your ability to feel satiety.

You will get used to it.  It just takes time.  Don't try to bypass this step because it is important for your newly altered anatomy.

This was the hardest thing for me to accept, also.  And do try to wait 60 minutes after eating as opposed to just 30. Hardest thing for me to get used to was eating meals, lunch and dinner, of course, without diet soda.  But I will gladly relearn how to eat and drink since I have been given a second chance at enjoying life with my new stomach!!!  Best wishes to you!

My dad, who had the bypass in 2011 drinks when he eats all of the time.  He's also not down to where he should be.

Exactly!  My SIL had bypass about 10 years ago and she continues to drink with all her meals because she just "can't not drink".  And guess what?  She's still 100 lbs. overweight
