NEVER thought I would have this problem

My highest weight was 300. I'm a little over a year out and I'm currently in the 159 range. I'm 6'1" so I am definitely "skinny", but I feel fantastic and I go to the gym almost daily.

My "problem" is friends, co-workers and family telling me I look "sick" and need to gain weight. Just the other day I had a co-worker tell me "I hate to tell you this, but you don't look good". My mother and father also think I'm too skinny. If I was hearing this from just a few people I could more easily ignore it but it's been a lot of people so there must be some truth to it. I would like to be in the 170 range but I don't want to start putting on weight because I fear it may get out of control.

I never thought I would have a problem putting on weight but I think that's where I am at the moment. Since I feel so good, I'm not sure if I should let this bother me but it is getting on my nerves.

I have an appointment this week. Last visit he told me I look like a marathon runner and that I shouldn't lose any more weight. I have been maintaining that weight (160) for quite a while now. I should also note they wanted me to be a "spokesperson" during their informational meetings and support group meetings. I also have had people tell me I look great so I guess the mixed messages are confusing.

It's strange but I'm afraid to put on some pounds because I'm afraid I won't be able to stop where I want. I never want to go back to being overweight.

I think that, if you're afraid of gaining a little weight (especially if your weight keeps going down from what your doc says is healthy) that you might consider seeing a therapist to help address that fear - but that might be something worth talking about with your PCP when you see him again.

I do think it's wise to be concerned when lots of people start expressing their worry to you about your weight.

Recently my brother was in the same situation. He lost a large amount of weight and he did look unhealthy.  I was afraid to say anything because I know how hard he worked to reach his goal. Other family members and friends told him he was too skinny and did not look healthy. At first was taken back by the comments. Then he realized they were right and 10lbs put the nice structure back in his face. He has maintained and is happier than ever. Having people telling you you look sick is disheartening. Maybe gain 10lbs and work your butt off to stay there! Although this is coming from a highly insecure person. If you are the type that doesn't care what others think then keep doing what you are doing. You said you feel great!! ☺

All that matters is how you feel. If you feel healthy then stay where you are and shrug off other people sticking there nose where it don't belong. I loose any weight and my grandma and mom were the first to comment I lost too much lol.

I wouldn't purposely try putting on weight I agree it could easily get out of control. Give it some time and I'm sure your body will have some natural bounce back to where it feels good, probably closer to 2yrs.

Remember you did this for you so you have to be happy and healthy .

Are the people who are telling you you're too skinny the people that knew you before WLS?  Then it's not surprising.  I would think twice if it were people who didn't know you pre-op that were saying you're too skinny.  If you're feeling good, then I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as you feel good and your within normal bmi range, then go with it. Try putting on muscle weight and that will probably satisfy those that are concerned and will raise your metabolic rate. You'll reap the benefits over the years.

if you are at the gym this much, i'm sure the weight will be HARD to put back on and it will be mostly muscle.  I have been eating enormous amounts of food for 4 months and maybe have put on 5lbs of muscle.  it's hard work.  make sure they are good clean calories, including lots and lots of carbs from whole fruit, veg and whole grains and fats (these are les filling per calorie!).  see how it goes for a month at 500cals above your maintenance calories.  I think you'll be surprised how little you actually gain.

If your day at the gym is mostly cardio, there's your problem.  That was my mistake earlier in the year.

If so, drop the cardio and go all weights for three months.  If your diet is proper, the loss of cardio won't matter.

A combination of calorie restriction and heavy cardio will give that result your friends and family are commenting on.

If none of this applies, then you got me.....
