I haven't had my surgery, scheduled for 12/4. I read in my information binder that it takes 3 months for us to heal completely from the sleeve. I LOVE jerky, but I'd definitely wait a little longer even before having turkey jerky. Just say to yourself that 'yes, someday I'll have jerky. Just not today.' My friend had the RNY and she eats turkey jerky as a snack. But she's 2 years out.

When I was released by the doctor to eat as I felt capable as far as what foods to choose, beef and turkey jerky both were things I liked.  The portions are pretty small so I was able to get some protein impact w/o eating high volume.  I loved it.  Now it's part of my normal, diverse diet.  Don't get to it a lot but like to know it's there when I feel like it.

Beef jerky is a go, but....

You really REALLY need to read the nutrition information.  The level of sugars vary greatly so you can't just grab any ole package off the shelf and have at it.  Generally, all the flavored versions (Spicy, etc.) will have higher sugars and aren't worth touching.  However, the sugars aren't necessarily limited to just the flavored versions which is why you have to read the labels.  Sodium tends to run a bit high in them also.  So depending on your opinion about salt, you might need to watch how much you take in.

Also, I wouldn't make jerky a staple.  It's probably best used as a bridge when needed.

Excellent point about flavorings.  Some have sugar as second ingredient!  You have to be a label watcher for certain.

Jerky can be a good, quick protein snack.   I prefer the turkey jerky but have eaten all kinds, including the buffalo jerky from Trader Joe's that I love!

I started eating jerky at about 5 weeks out.  I started with turkey jerky and quickly moved on to beef.  My nutritionist was a little surprised because she said jerky is dry and hard to digest.  But, I like it, it takes a while to eat, and it is easy to take with me.

I eat jerky all the time but you need to read the label and fit it into your plan

I don't eat it daily, but when I need to increase my protein I find it a good option.

I buy the Pacific Gold Original Premium Beef Jerky that are in 1.2 ounce individual serving packs from Costco.

90 calories

14 grams of protein

8 grams of carbs

I didn't eat jerky until I was several months out from surgery, so I don't know how it will affect a newly sleeved stomach.  But jerky is very filling to me and gets my salt craving satisfied.
