My plan does not allow it especially in the first few months...it can cause serious damage if swallowed.

no mention of gum in my packet either...and i was an avid gum chewer. besides making you more hungry...chewing gum causes gas and bloating as you chew it

My plan makes no mention of it.  (Or of straws.)  From what I can tell the issue with gum is that you might swallow it.  But I haven't had that problem since I was a kid so...

I chew gum regularly. I started a few weeks after surgery just to change the taste in my mouth that we get early on. I also very early on mistakenly swallowed it...and lived to tell.

I actually contacted my surgeon after seeing on OH that it could get lodged, blow my stitches, and send me to the ER. I was freaking out! He reassured me I was eating items that were bigger than a little piece of gum and they travel right through my system so the gum is no different.

I would say it's a preference. If the sugar alcohols don't bother you I can't see why it's a problem. You'll have to make up your own mind on this one but seriously you likely won't need to be scoped in emergency (if you read the same old posts I read! :-) or be faced with a near death experience!

But hey...I'm neither a doctor nor a chewing gum salesperson...so what do I know?

150 pounds gone for now! :-)  Initial goal weight of 170 lbs met on March 7, 2014.  My 44 year old bones survived hiking 4 days overland to a highest point of 4700 metres! Machu Picchu goal...CONQUERED!
