Weight loss phase
I was at a support group meeting the other day and one of the leaders was answering a question about RNY vs VSG. She said that With VSG weight loss is in the first 6 months. With RNY it is for 12-18 months. I see people here losing over 100lbs with VSG. So I guess my question is how long were you in the weight loss phase after VSG?
I think she is a bit mis-stating the situation with VSG the sleeve will stretch some over time but no where near to its original size. The stretchiest part of the stomach is removed as well as the grehlin (appetite hormone) producing area so over time your stomach will stretch abit, so the first 6 mos are probably your best time to take advantage of the sleeve but you will still be able to take advantage of your sleeve for life. With the RNY however the malabsorbtion goes away after the first 12-18 mos and the body once again starts absorbing the calories. So often this is when the RNYers start to regain weight but, lots of them succeed in keeping their weight off too they just realize that they have to be more vigilant again. You can re-lose weight with either of them but the beginning is the best time for any surgery!
My weight loss phase will be as long as it needs to be to reach my goal. So far I've been losing for 10 months, I had surgery 8 months ago. I predict it'll take me about 2 years to reach my goal since I had 200 pounds to lose and I know that weight loss will slow down as I get closer to my goal.

I'm still in the weight loss mode approaching 11 months.
Without question, I lost a good portion of weight in the first six months but I continue to lose consistently.

I agree with the others. Weight loss slowing down is a function of a lot of things, but what you choose to put in your mouth is the biggest part of it. I think a lot of people get diet fatigue around the 6 month mark - especially because many of us had supervised diets prior to surgery, so we've been "dieting" for quite some time by that point. I had a bit of a slow down at month 6, but I'm not quite to the 7 month mark and I've already lost more this month (12 pounds) than I did in month 6 (8 pounds). My "weight loss phase" will last until I'm at goal because I will make that happen.
There are many reasons to choose one surgery over the other, and chances are you'll be happy either way, but the length of time that you can lose weight isn't really different between RNY and the sleeve.
She may be completely accurate for "that" program.
Many VSG programs shoot for 50-60% EWL as successful with larger sleeves and higher calorie plans.
Is it possible to lose more weight over a longer period of time.....yes, at some point it becomes all you.
Our program shoots for 100%EWL and I've seen people reach it between 5 months to 2 years depending on how much weight they had to lose.
