Difficulty during post-op full liquid phase
Everyone, my husband had his sleeve surgery on 11/4 and is on the 2 week full liquid phase. He's really struggling - the man is starving, grumpy and light headed. He's graduated from broth, to strained cream soups to IsoPure high protein shakes, but is very hungry all the time. Is this to be expected?
Your husband should not be hungry at this point. Perhaps head hunger?? I would contact the doctor about being light headed. I will be three weeks post op Friday and not once have I been hungry or had head hunger. From what I understand and I have read the hunger hormone comes back in about 3 to 4 months.
Yes, I was lucky and only had to do 1 week full liquids. I got through the week with no problems but I can only imagine how I would have been if I had to go 2 weeks. I was hungry early on and it eventually faded over the first few weeks. Maybe it was acid but when I mentioned this to my surgeon, he just said that was not his experience and it wsa probably more thirst. Others on here say acid is the culprit mimicking hunger. I think it could have been a combination of both.

I am post op day 12 and am hungry often ( although have never been so hungry I was lightheaded.) I wasn't until a few days ago though. I will be advancing to puréed/ soft in a few days and think my body is just ready for the next phase. Make sure he is getting all his fluids in also!
From my understanding most do experience hunger, I don't think the surgery stops that completely.
From what I remember, during that post-op liquid phase, I missed chewing on something. It was just a weird feeling around my mouth/jaw area that is hard to describe. When I mentioned this to my surgeon on the 1 week follow up, he said a lot of patients mention that. It was also during this time that I realized just how many food commercials there are on TV.

He may not be loving full liquids, but it's a necessary evil. Diet progression varies by surgeon, so you can call the office and ask if it's okay to go to soft foods. Just be sure that he's getting 64oz of fluids every day. This is very important. Dehydration causes more fatigue and nausea, and also contributes to kidney stones, so push those liquids no matter what the doc says.
