Protein Post-OP

Hi All,

I am scheduled for surgery 12/1.  I have a question about protein.  I'm so freaked out about losing my hair and not getting enough protein.  When I can do shakes again (3 days post-op), can I use the same amount of protein and just 4 oz of milk?  I am not sure I will be able to get 3- 8oz glasses in a day.

Also, has anyone every added the unflavored protein to vitamin water?  I'm thinking that could kill 2 birds with 1 stone - protein and water.

Any advice would be welcomed!

Thanks!

PS - Day 8 of my Pre-OP and I don't feel like I'm dying but I am certainly not enjoying this ride!

Yes, the protein drinks count as water.  Regarding making the protein shakes 4oz instead of 8 oz, I guess theoretically would work but the shakes would be thicker, which will make them harder to get down anyway. You have to try your best, but they really don't expect you to be able to meet your protein goals right away.

It gets better!

unflavored protein just means not chocolate or vanilla. It still has a taste. It tastes like whey which is what many find objectionable. I am pretty sure you won't like it in water.

You can mix the protein anyway you can drink it but again, there is the problem. I would mix a half scoop in 4 ounces of milk and work up from there.

Hi,

I hit my protein goals daily and still lost a good deal of hair. Nothing will really stop it and you will deal, trust me!

i added unflavored to vitamin water and it worked, you can taste the whey a little, so pick a strong flavored water.

Good luck!!

I am still pre-op but, you can get ISOPURE drinks at GNC. They are a little pricey but, they gave 40 grams protein per bottle and 160 calories. Kind of like a crystal light. I have some stocked up for my post-op.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telogen_effluvium -- This is why we lose our hair.  You can get all the protein in the world and still have a problem.  So don't worry too much.

You can add protein to anything, yes.  You can also make your shakes thinner so they're easier to drink if that helps.
