Low blood pressure after surgery

Hello everyone.  My husband had his sleeve done on 11/4, recovering pretty well, but between his blood pressure medication (which he doesn't take now) and the injections 10 days post surgery, his blood pressure is a little low and it's really affecting his energy levels.

Has anyone else experienced low blood pressure after surgery?  How can it be remedied?

Getting my pre-op testing on Monday and still on schedule for surgery 12/9.

Thanks!

Increase his fluid intake and add a little salt to his food. Most of us have always been told to steer clear of salt because of hypertension but now he probably needs to hold on to a little fluid.

It's fairly common. I had a few incidents of fainting as well. Look up orthostatic hypotension. His bp will be lowest after standing up from sitting or lying down, and he could get dizzy or faint.

The best thing to do is drink, drink, and drink some more. Extra electrolytes help. I drank Powerade Zero a lot. Extra salt also helps -- the doctors all told me to use extra salt.

It will fade over time as our veins recover from supporting a morbidly obese body.

How Low is it?  under 95/60, I'd go to the doc about it.  Have a blood count done as well to check the hemoglobin levels...should be around 12, lower than 10ish and you feel tired, lower than 8ish and you can talk transfusion.

Mine is at 100/60 now and I have the orthostatic hypotension (light headedness when standing) and there are things you can do to help that.  increase fluids, and salt, wear compression socks (especially if there are varicose veins - those suckers hog the blood) and pump the leg muscles when standing to encourage blood flow back to the head.

It had gotten very low, that's why his doctor had him stop his blood pressure medication.  It has improved but is still a little low.  Thanks for the suggestions, he's going to try them.

Yes!  I was on 2 meds for BP pre-op and it was only moderately controlled. Post op I was off the meds and couldn't keep it up. Dizziness on standing, etc. Increasing my fluids and adding some G2 or other electrolyte beverage helped A LOT.  I keep the G2 around now and try to get one a day especially in the summer or around intense workouts.

Thanks, we're going to have to pick some up soon for him and then have them on hand for me as well.  Thanks again.

I experienced it not only after surgery but any time I began a low carb diet. I drink lots of chicken broth and that makes it much better. Salt is your friend!
