Surgery Tomorrow - Worried about Nausea?

My surgery is tomorrow afternoon.  I'm not worried about pain since I had laparotomies twice in the past, but am worried about nausea.  The surgeon said to expect it and they generally don't medicate for it because they want to be able to assess it to determine if anything is wrong.  How bad is it usually and on average how long will it last?

The only thing that worked for my husband AFTER they tried everything else was that little motion sickness patch behind the ear.  I asked for it up front and had no issues.  See if they can stick that on you before surgery.  It could help.  Good luck!

I think what you're talking about is the scopalmine patch, I remember it worked very well for nausea but it is also dries up secretions which left me with the most horrible dry mouth...I begged them to take it off!!

They don't medicate for nausea after surgery?? I would demand it! There are many tests to determine if something is wrong, using nausea as an indicator doesn't make any sense. nausea is a common, and very unpleasant side effect of the anesthesia used during surgery. it is especially intense the first few days following.

Just my 2 cents...

This. I honked on myself in recovery after surgery on my *hand*. Nothing to do with a surgery on my tummy... anesthesia can make you violently nauseous all by its lonesome.

What your doc said is absolute baloney.  They routinely medicate you for nausea.  When the anethesiologist comes in, talk to him about it.  And ask for the scopolamine patch.  If it gives you trouble, you can always just pull it off, but it really does help with the nausea.

Thank you for the advice!  I will talk to the anesthesiologist about it, as I did have problems with nausea from anesthesia once.

I just had my VSG surgery last Tuesday and never experienced any nausea. prior to surgery they put a patch behind my ear and after surgery i had absolutely no nausea. Although the patch will give you a very dry mouth and throat. - Also my pain was very little and i stopped pain meds the day after surgery. ... I am down 20lbs the past 5 days :)

Good luck tomorrow....

I need to hijack the post to ask if you are participating in a support group? My husband and I moved to Aurora in July and we can't seem to find a local group. If you know of any, please let me know.
