Hi Everyone:

Well, I'm 4 days post-op and I'm 2.5 lbs OVER my starting weight. The bariatric coordinator called me today and we went over everything....no, I'm not getting in enough water (I'm at about 45-55)...yes, on protein, yes, I made my own turkey broth so I know what salt is in it...and on we went. I told her that I'm off all my meds; Metformin, Atenenol, and, wait for it.....my water pill!

So, now I'm back on my hydrochlorothazide and let's hope for some progress. Thank goodness I said what I did or else we wouldn't have known. She said as long as I drink my water and don't have signs of dehydration to take it. I'm so relieved.

Let's hope I'm on the loser's bench soon!

It's very normal to gain water weight from surgery.  They pumped you full of fluids and your body is holding onto them.  It'll come off, and the weight loss will begin.  Stay off of the scale for a few weeks and just concentrate on sticking to your program.

Thanks emelar - I knew that but I still felt something was off. I was told today that 9 lbs was a  lot to have from surgery. But, hey, who am I to know? I've never been through this before. I'm just going with the plan and getting my energy level back.

I deliberately stayed off the scale for 2 days after the surgery. Now I'll stay off it until next week.

I am 9 days post-op.  Just so you know you aren't alone, day after surgery I was up 10.6 lbs. I personally feel the scale needs to become our friend. Keeping the distance is what allowed things to get out of control in the first place. I weigh in everyday, generally more than once a day as far as that goes. Keeps me accountable.

Congratz on your surgery. :)

I am surprised that they put you back on hydrochlorothiazide for only 2.5 lbs, especially if you aren't drinking enough water to begin with. My surgeon was adamant that I stay away from it due to dehydration. It's common to even pick up 10 lbs due to the IVs, it's jus****er, it'll come off.

I gained 15 lbs post op. It's not real. The whole first month is healing time. Don't focus on the numbers. Trust the process. Eat your protein and drink your water and walk. The weight will start melting off.

My surgeon didn't want me on a diuretic because of the risk of dehydration. Water gained in the hospital does go away on its own. Be VERY careful about possible dehydration - you have to get the liquids in if you are on a diuretic.

Join the club! I gained 12 pounds while in the hospital for my VSG. All fluids from the IV. Took about a week to lose it and then the scale just kept going. Stick to your program and make getting the water in your #1 priority.

Frankly, I'm surprised they let you go back on the diuretic this soon, but I know every surgeon's post op program is different. Please be aware of signs of dehydration. I've seen post op dehydration first hand and it is scary, scary, scary!

I was a bit scared about going back on it again as well. I'm going to try it every other day and see how it goes.

Thanks for info!
