Today is the 1 year anniversary of my weight loss surgery. What a wildly crazy year it has been! My wife is a year and two weeks out from his. We can honestly say we have 0 regrets over the decision to have weight loss surgery. We both consider it one of the best decisions we have ever made, if not the best. Our lives have changed so much as a result.

My wife started out at 289.2 lbs with a BMI of 45.44. He had an excess body weight of 130.2lbs. Her ideal body weight is 159.0lbs. As of today her weight is 181.0 with a BMI of 28.44. She has lost 83.10% of her excess body weight and is 22 lbs away from her idea body weight she no longer has high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabtes. Even her sciatic nerve has stopped hurting. She has gone from a size 44 pants to a size 33 and a 4x shirt to large.

I started out at 272.2 with a BMI of 45.46. I had an excess body weight of 121.2lbs with an ideal body weight of 151.0lbs. As of today I weigh 164.0 with a BMI of 27.39. I have lost 89.27% of my excess body weight and I am 13lbs away from my ideal body weight. (The doctors scale weighs me 5lbs heavier than my home scale so I could say 8 lbs away ) but I am using official medical record numbers for this update I have went from a size 24 pants to a size 10 and a 3x shirt to a medium.

The numbers are good and I am a numbers person so they matter to me. But what matters more are the other things. We have ran three 5K races and have another one tomorrow. We are training, actually freaking training, for a half marathon in March and a sprint triathlon in June. My wife plans to do a Half Iron Man in Fall 2018 and I am after a 200 mile relay race. We have found a love of pushing these new bodies to see just what else can they do. We have worked on our head and emotional stuff around food and have come to understand a lot of our triggers and developed tools to avoid them or navigate them if avoidance doesn't work. We know this is a lifetime change that we need to make and will strive to continue our healthy choices and changes, but to also not self sabatoge ourselves into a pit of repeated mistakes from one misstep.

This surgery will make you lose weight, but the getting healthy emotionally and physically is where the work comes in. I am so very proud of us both for the work we have done and will continue to do. I could not have asked for a better partner to do it with.
