Some things I've learned (I'm pre-op so take it for what it's worth :>)) (this is something I posted about on the Q & A board) My nutritionist told me something that makes a lot of sense to me: It's not the number of calories you eat that get you in the end; it's the type of calories you consume! Think about it, if you eat a diet high in starchy carbs (potatoes are a great example...very low in calories, but very high in carbs) and keep to 1000 calories a day you aren't likely to lose weight and may even gain. If however you eat the same 1000 calories but make it 99% protein and non-starchy carbs (green veggies and low-sugar fruits) you should lose weight and feell full longer. Just something to think about. Oh and he recommends the 1000 a day of protein and non-starchy carbs. He told me if you don't consume "around" 1000 calories a day your body will get kind of confused. By starving one day and then eating too much the next you never allow it to set a pattern to acheive maximum loss. I have also read (sorry can't quote or offer citations) that soy can effect some people poorly and actually reduce your weight-loss. You might try cutting it out of your diet for a while and seeing if that doesn't help. Hope some of this helps even a bit. I woudl have emailed it but...Hugs, Tooter

*clapping hands wildly for you* Congratulations!!! It was so nice to read your history and follow what you've been through. Like you I have a Fatty Liver, but it hasn't developed into anything worse......yet! I'm scheduled for surgery on November 27th, only 12 more days!!! Good luck with your recovery, and keep us posted!

Hi everybody! I'm doing an update on myself. I had surgery Wednesday, November 7, and was home by Sunday. I'm just now starting to feel a little more human. I am sort of worried about not doing enough physically to avoid a blood clot, eat the best balanced diet, etc. But, my spirits are lifting day by day.

My surgeon was great. I'll try not to go into my whole story here, but Dr. Brems did confirm cirrhosis. The assumption, since I am free of viral hepatitis disease and I don't drink, is that this is from steatohepatitis or fatty liver. My laymen description is that the fat invaded my liver causing scarring and finally cirrhosis.

If any of you have read my profile this year, you'll know my original surgery was in April 2001 with Dr. Kane and that procedure was aborted the morning of surgery because of the cirrhosis. Confused? So was I. I walked around for months trying to find some clear-cut answers and possible treatments, but found none of either. I came to Dr. Brems because he is the liver transplant surgeon at Loyola University Medical Center here in the Chicago area. He was wonderfully to the point. His opinion was I needed the surgery. He felt my liver function tests were good and was comfortable that the outcome of weight loss might help preserve the liver tissue I have left. I have been contacted by just a few of you telling me about a similar situation. I want to make sure that you all know that there is hope. I was so despondent and, ashamed to say, faithless at times during this past year. It's been a great strain on my family, although they have been wonderfully supportive.

I havent felt up to updating my profile page but will eventually have the story there with some links to my personal web page for photos of before and after. Good luck and prayers for all.

I am so sorry to read about your bad news Katherin. I just read over my surgery page and read your note to me about us being surgery partners on the same date and I was just wondering on how you made out only to see you werent't doing to well. All I can say is God has a reason for everything but I can see you already know that. I wish things were going to work out differently for you. You will be in my prayers Katherin.

Katherin - So sorry to hear about, as you put it, your fork in the road on this journey of weight loss. I can read your journals and see you wanted this so much. I do hope you find good health though, despite this recent set back. I will say a prayer for you...
